I just noticed the exhaust flange has rusted on my '05 with 55k . My son who drives the car didn't notice the louder exhaust due to increased radio volume. I have been searching the blogs and noticed this is a common problem with Muranos. The fix seems to be a new pipe welded in when the rest of the system is in good shape.
Has Nissan addressed this problem? What size diameter pipe is used? Has anyone tried walker repair flanges? Thanks for any response. |

I'm not sure what the diameter is, but I would highly recommend going to a welding/muffler shop. Not Midas or any general shop, but some place that will actually cut out the pipe and weld something in it's place (either a new flange or just weld a pipe and get rid of the flange altogether).
You probably saw my other posts about me doing that, but just to re-iterate it would have been a $1300+ repair with replacement OEM parts, but instead I think I got a better solution as now I don't have to deal with the flange at all, and it only cost me $65. You just can't beat that, unless you know how to do it yourself!

I also paid $65 to weld mine at a local spanish shop. Engine running so smooth that I'm back to double-checking if engine is running sometimes. Good luck.

Hi
My MO has been getting louder and louder for the last few months. I guess something is wrong with the exhaust system How can I check where? rust on muffler or flange? MO seems to have two mufflers : one in the middle and one in the back..right? |

Checking for most exhaust leaks is fairly simple. Start your car, let it idle in Park, get down on the ground, and listen for leaks. The flanges connecting the exhaust components appear to be the weak links in the system. Pay close attention to them. ![]() -njjoe

Yes. Today I looked underneath and found the problem expected. You guys are awesome!
I attach a photo of my rust out flange. The two pipes are completely disconnected!! A and B correspond to the flanges in the schematic plot. Now I am concerned how to fix this. Repairing is very very expensive with the dealers here in Montreal. (They take the car and replace everything and charge thousands!!!bloody hell.i will never go back there) I really need a cheaper solution..here..should I maybe drive to the US and find a small shop to do it? |

jeanguy-
There is no need to visit the dealer for this one. Any reputable muffler shop can cut out a few inches on either side of the flange and weld in a new pipe segment. -njjoe

Removed the flange entirely, just welded the two pipes with a new pipe in between. A flange is just going to be extra cost either way you slice it (pun intended) so there's no need for it.

Here's a shot of my fixed flange. It cost $50. Midas wanted to replace from the cat back for $750.... Print this photo & Find an independent shop...

Went to a muffler shop and had it fixed..I think beautifully.
The guy welded in a flange. The white stuff is the anti-rust spray. costs 50 CAD. The shop is so crowded, dusty and noisy...four welders working at the same time....u have nowhere to hide from the ultra-violet rays as it was raining hard outside... can not complain much for 50 bucks.. |
