Time required: 20-40min.
Tools needed: 14mm socket and flat screwdriver. Jack up stand. 0W-20 oil and oil filter (5W-30 as an alternative). Oil filter removal tool - not necessarily needed, but makes oil filter removal much easier.
Total price: $30 USD (or $40 CAD).
Expertise level: anyone can do it (well almost anyone).
Recommended or not: Yes for enthusiasts and those who are anal about their maintenance, but probably not worth it for all others (even though you save $$$ and time by not going to a dealer).
Took me 40min with a coffee break, but most of it was preparation and getting to know specifics. Next time would take me 20-30 min max probably.
So I bought 0W-20 Full Synthetic oil (I chose Castrol Edge with Titanium FST becaue it was on sale at Canadian Tire for $22 (or $29 CAD) and bought OEM oil filter from Nissan Dealer for $7 (or $10 CAD) only because it has back-flow stop valve, not that it really makes any difference, I could have used any other oil filter just fine, but just in case and washer came with oil filter for free.
So all you need is a flat screwdriver and 14mm socket (or 9/16 in inches). You can jack up the Murano if you need more space to work underneath - only jacking up right side of the car will do, as there will be already enough space to work under. I used standard jacking tool that came with Murano (located in trunk). Don't forget to use safety jack stands.
Oil pan bolt is also behind a plastic panel with 4 plastic clips that are very easy to take off with flat screwdriver. You have to pull up central part of plastic clip using tip of flat screwdriver and then whole clip can be easily taken out. They are reusable and come out easily.Use flat screwdriver and viola. Use 14mm socket and don't forget to catch old oil into a pan. Let it all drain for 5-10min. After I pour in new oil - I use empty jar to fill it up with old oil and I put it out for recycling pick up (free in my neighborhood). So everyone is happy, environment is not hurt. I usually tighten oil pan bolt with just enough torque that you can feel some resistance. Don't overdo it.
Oil filter is behind front passenger side wheel. You need to turn steering wheel all the way towards right and you'll have a nice access to oil filter. Oil filter is behind a plastic panel with 4 similar clips. Though not necessary I would recommend oil filter removal tool - that would make it much easier. In worst case scenario if previously someone tightened oil filter too much - just use screwdriver - puncture oil filter and use screwdriver as a lever/handle toi turn it counterclockwise. Oil filter is tightened by hand, no need to over-tighten it as well.
It takes 4.8L oil to fill it up completely up to High mark on dipstick. I used 4,7L. Let the car work for 3min after oil change then shut it down and wait 5-10 min to check oil level via dipstick. That's it.
So roughly $30 (or $40 CAD) and I got myself 1st service maintenance without going anywhere.
Is it worth it? In terms of money probably yes - for example check Edmund's 1st maintenance price they paid for their long term test Murano 2015. I don't remember exactly, but I think dealer charged them $92, which is ridiculous and it was for conventional oil only! BTW it took them 1 hour to service and add to that drive to dealer and back time. So you save some time as well.
However, for me - it's extra peace of mind to know that I have proper synthetic oil and that there wasn't any dishonest mechanic that put conventional oil in it and charged me for synthetic.
Now all I need is to wright down all data in my record book and staple receipts in.
