Default Social posters

We have had a rash of these guys lately with no connection to MO at all. Can/should we be doing something about them to reduce the forum clutter?

I was tempted to start a similar thread earlier today. I was thinking that if we didn't do anything they would eventually move on.

On the other hand...their posts have some kind of link on the bottom. I haven't personally clicked any of them but I would hate to see this site be blamed for links to other hazerdous sites.

It's people behind these kinds of posts that give the internet a bad reputation. Losers with nothing better to do than wack off and cruise the internet.

I am not sure if "no connection to MO" is a good enough reason to ban someone from this site but if they are here to spam or otherwise create an unsafe environment then we should do something about it. At this point this matter is being discussed.

Yes, I too feel that recent "questions/comment" not related to the MO detracts from this site.

I don't know what they're motive is, but there are lots of sites for "social" posters.

Will replying to some of their questions reveal anything about our private email addresses or passwords?

Sercurity would be my #1 issue with our site.

Please be advised that the Moderators are looking into the latest rash of "social posters". We had a somewhat similar problem about 18 months ago and worked with ADMIN to address the issue.

We will continue to moniter the situation and take the appropriate steps to ensure this forum does not become polluted.

I moderate some other forums as well, and on those forums we do not allow links to outside commercial sites of any sort to reduce the possibility that someone is phishing or trying to gain free advertising/exposure on a public forum - this includes links in the signature as well.

I think we would do well here to adopt a similar rule. Obviously links that are meant to help people like a link to a part someone is looking for, is fine. But a lot of these random posters who don't own a MO or aren't automotive enthusiasts post here to drum up indirect publicity for their business.

Eric: I'm new here so I'm reading everything I can about rules, guidelines etc. How would you differentiate a link that was meant to help someone from a well worded link that is a covert attempt to infuse a freebie ad into the forum? I have left several links to products I have purchased, but I could just as easily have been a shill. You also have the additional dimension of having paying advertisers here....and the posting of a link to another site that carries the same products might be viewed as unfair competition to those who pay versus those who don't. This would be a difficult policy to enforce fairly in view of those members who want to help versus the shills. Then there's the issue of folks getting a bit pissed over the increase in advertising in general....so this is a multi faceted issue.

Default Frustration

Since Anthony Weiner does not post pictures of the vehicle of their choice, I assume they want to create spam for we who try to truly discuss our MO's. Maybe they will return to their true hero, PeeWee Herman.
