Default Searching

Hi all,

I think one of the most common answers to any question around here is "that's been answered before, search the forum". But I realized that maybe they did search the forum. It seems it's not as easy as putting keywords into the search bar at the top of the forum. This will only search recent threads. 'Recent' seems to be defined as less than a year. So if your answer isn't there, you then have to navigate to the archives and repeat the search (or start a new thread). Example: I searched "performance" in an attempt to find the thread titled "Performance Exhaust For Less". Never found it. I searched "exhaust" and again didn't find it. I had to go through my subscribed threads to find the link.

Seems like we'd avoid having to answer "search the forum" so much if the main search bar searched BOTH the current threads AND archives and listed the results from newest to oldest. Is this possible? Am I doing something wrong?

Patrick

Phatty, one thing I have done is go to Google, use the Advanced Search function, put in your search terms, and put in www.nissanmurano.org as a domain or site.

IMO it works a lot better than the site search "engine".

Excellent idea! I only wish that I had thought of it first.

Thanks, I'm using that tip! But since the site is now under new management, what are the chances that we'll get an integrated google search bar (like other forums) instead of the handicapped search bar we have now?? Would be nice to be able to stay within the site you're trying to search.

Good point! I'm actually trying to have a website built, same forum style and all (has nothing to do with cars though) and the "sophisticated" search databases are a lot of money to run. For instance, my brother's real estate office spent 30k on theirs because they needed a really good search engine. Hopefully new management has deeper pockets.

I tried last week to do a search on post I made to reference in a reply to a current posting the other day, and I got 12 pages of post, but there were no physical post display.

I think that specific problem is due to the transition to the new servers. Seems to be having a mapping issue. The way I get around that is to navigate to "control panel", under Subscribed Threads click on Show Threads "from the beginning" and thumb through 'em. It's tedious though.

Hopefully the new management team will improve the functionality of the forum once it updates the vbulletin software. The latest version is 4.0 and we are currently running 2.2.8. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
