Default 1st gen grill how to?

Anyone know if there is a how-to on painting the stock "chrome" grill? I've seen some posts mention krylon. Thoughts?

I've heard Krylon Fusion works great!

I need to do mine soon!

I suspect that for any long-term solution, you'll need to prep the surface and have something more textured than chrome plating to shoot. Maybe bead blasting or light sanding would help.

If it was me, I'd use one of the epoxy paints. Do good surface prep, and the epoxy paint will adhere and won't come off. They actually use this stuff on guns.

Sounds like a very good approach!

But remember, paint is no better than surface prep.

Are you planning on shooting the paint over the chrome or on the base plastic? Remember, the grille is just plastic with chrome layered on top. If you're running a 03-07 MO, they were NOTORIOUS for the chrome bubbling up on the plastic. I ultimately replaced my grille due to this.

Came out better though.

I might try to find an old grill in a salvage yard to paint, then put that grill on. If I sand it down to the plastic, could I do it by hand it would I need a sander?

It's an 04. Getting tired of the "chrome". I think a gloss black would look good with the midnight blue exterior paint

I got tired of the chrome and busy look also. Cut 2 vertical bars out on each side, bondoed, primed and painted it flat black. Posted pics about 1 month ago can repost here.

Otwall, your post was one of the posts that gave me the idea. Did you remove the Nissan badge before prep and paint?

Yep, its just held on by 2 bolts on the back. I used a primer I found at a hardware store, then a generic black automotive paint.

Primer only, no sanding? Has it bubbled up like others have mentioned?

The chrome already was bubbled and clear coat was peeling. I sanded all that off then primed it.
