I was wondering if anyone on here has removed thier roof rails. I was thinking about it cause I think they look ugly and was wondering if anyone had done it and if they new how and how much work was involved. Thanks.

BigNate-
I do not recall reading about any forum member removing the rails, however, that does not mean it can not be done. The rails are bolted, not welded, to the roof structure. Once removed you will need to fill the bolt holes to prevent water infiltration and replace the black roof strip with the continuous piece found on MOs without the rack. Personally, I like the MO without a roof rack. To me, a roof rack without crossbars is a useless piece of cosmetic "fluff', kind of like Buicks with fake exhaust ports on the fenders, or the old Firebirds with fake hood scoops. It's simply a matter of preference; some like 'em, others don't. -njjoe

Gonzo covered this issue and posted instructions HERE . Once you remove them, you'll probably be able to sell the rails to someone. I've been rack-free since inception. I like the smooth look. That once every millennium time I need to put stuff on the roof, I have a BIC sport rack leftover from my skiing days. Fits like a glove. Good Luck

I know it's a matter of preference but I despise the MO without rails.
It's like a hot woman in the sexy black dress but she's wearing flip flops instead of high heels. They finish off the look. In fact, I like the look so much that I added the X bars, primarily due to the fact that I'll be mounting my roof box up there next week. Take a good look at a MO without rails- are you sure that you want it that way? |

Or a hot woman with a silk blouse and no bra? Personal preference. My MO is topless or should I say rack-less. At first I did not like the fact that the rack was not there but soon became accustomed to the sleek lines and oh my, it is so much easier to wash and wax it without the rack. Beside, I know in a million years I would have never loaded the roof with 2x4 lumber from Home Depot or anything else for that matter. Just happened the SL on the lot that had the color and equipment we wanted was rack-less. I bought a few days before the start on the new year in 2004. There were just a few 2004 models on the lot. The Mo was just gaining popularity back then and choice was quite limited at my local dealers. If I had a choice, I would have gone with the rack but now it does not even cross my mind. I would leave the rack if it were there as I would not want to deal with holes in the roof from the screws. Bob1

I like big racks!
I actually bought crossbars off of one of the members to go with my roof rails, because I think they need the bars to finish it off. And going on vacation I may want to get a roof box to hold some additional items.Shoot, that's the reason i bought an SUV so I could haul more stuff. And besides, all of my dad's old station wagons had roof racks!
