Kris beat me to it, bias was ringing in my head that whole test. I've spent some time Auto-X'ing and from what I saw on those wet and coned tests I simply think the driver could have done a better job handling the bad example cars.

Now I can't deny that Subie has a nice reputation for stickiness and I'm sure those WRC wins didn't come out of nowhere but I definately think any video like this needs to be taken w/ a grain of salt.

And why couldn't the Mo have a few extra feet to have a run at that hill.....See, we are all biased

I'm aware this is MANY years later but, I just commented on a post similar to this one. You guys may know A LOT more now 5yrs later:

Interesting post. I was just up in VT last week in Stowe. We took our 2006 SL AWD up the Mt. Mansfield Auto Rd that morning. This road is all dirt/rock and climbs from the valley floor up to about 3800/3900'. The murano did great until near the top there were 2 or three really steep switchbacks. (At this point I had it in LOW I believe, no 4wd lock, no vdc on vehicle). On one of them I slowed to navigate up the switchback and half way into the steep turn I got nothing. Nada. Stopped dead in my tracks with accelerator mashed to the floor. I let off the accelerator and the tranny seemed to kick back in and I slowly inched up this grade. I don't know nothing about nothing but this was a very steep grade. Maybe I should cut the MO some slack? Didn't happen on the other switchbacks. After that occurance I probably approached those steep turns with a bit more vigor.

Holy cow this is weird! I was just in Stowe VT 2 weeks ago and climbed, I believe, the same mountain. It was on Mountain road just below "The Front Four" resort we were staying at.
Although ours is a newer 2011 with a different AWD setup, I believe the trannys are pretty close to being the same. Anywhooo...I just dropped it in low and locked the AWD and I had no problems at all..even on some of those sharp steep switchbacks. And I never even thought of turning off the traction control but again, I climbed up with no problems.
Coming down was even uneventful. I again used low and very little brakes. One helluva view from the top though. Small world!

Subaru has a knack for editing the results of their road test videos to over emphasize their pluses but yet hide their negatives.
