![]() Also serves as field desk, working out of the back. I replaced the lights on the hatch door with red LEDs to preserve night vision. They give plenty of illumination for reading charts and changing eyepieces and don't annoy my fellow astronomers. Now if I could figure out how to keep them from shutting off every half hour ... |

What if you leave the ignition in the ACC position? Since the rear hatch is open the Battery Saver feature should remain inactive.
By the way, that telescope rig or yours is unlike anything I have ever seen. What exactly is it and how is it used? -njjoe

I'll try the ACC but probably all the other interior lights would also be on.
The telescope is a Newtonian reflector (designed by Sir Isaac) - it uses a big parabolic mirror in the base to gather light and focus it to a smaller mirror in the top. The top mirror is on a 45 degree angle to reflect the light into a magnifying eyepiece. I built this scope myself, and the way it is mounted is generally called a Dobsonian mount. If you google up "Dobsonian Telescope" or "Amateur Telescope Making" there's quite a lot of info. Most commercially manufactured telescopes are motorized for tracking and have computers for locating objects, but I enjoy using a chart and hunting things down manually. My scope is completely hand-powered. |
