Question compund?? really???

i went to an auto parts store today looking for a glazer... because from what i read it is supposed to help with swirls or slight srcatches.. and i asked one of the employees what he recommended and he gave me a tin of compound... and i bought it but kept thinking.. no... this cant be right...

isnt compound for when u have an older paint job or have more serious problems??? from what i have read it is really abrasive and like sand paper... wouldnt that ruin the clear coat on my 2011??? it only cost 4 bucks so it didnt break the bank. but please someone tell me if im wrong here please.

Yes, there is a big difference. Compound is the most aggressive (abarasive) and should only be used on small areas on a new car if absolutely necessary. There are other polishes and less aggressive cleaners that you should use before you ever touch compound. Glazes seal and bring depth of color to the paint. They are used in a multiple step process of wash-clean (clay bar)-polish-glaze-wax. I only bother doing the "works" once a year in the spring.

More info can be found here: Compound, Polish, Glaze. What's the Difference?

And I think swirls are mostly an issue with dark colors, most especially black. My tinted bronze has a metallic finish that looks like it will hide swirls and minor scuffs rather well.

Clay bar won't do anything for swirl marks though. It's to remove contaminates on top of the paint. I've tried it and it does leave a nice smooth surface but I have a problem rubbing clay on my paint..lol.
I love Maguires products but if you do have swirl marks, only a good buffing or compounding will get rid of them however there are a few products out there that do a nice job of covering them up a little bit.
