Default 5 years paint protection from Dealer, bad or good?

Hello all,

I got my new Murano 2 months ago, and I had few minor cosmetic damages such as scratches on the brand new car, The dealership fixed everything, but there's a fairly huge area that looks very turbid and unclean above the back fender. It definitely needs polishing to bring back the glass-looking shine. I just noticed that and it is too late to take it back. It seems like they left the wax on the car without buffing it.

When I got the car they told me that they can apply a paint protector (with detail car wash) for $325 that last for 5 years and adds extra shine to the car. Does it worth it? Should I do that instead of polishing and waxing the car every few months on my own? Has anybody done it here? I thought they wax the car, but the dealership told me it's like a invisible paint they apply on top and protect the paint.

Thanks in advance,

The paint protection plan, in my opinion, is nothing more than a revenue generator for the dealer. It is no different from the undercoating or Scotchgard fabric protection offered by the many dealers.

I believe most members will agree with me on this one.

Don't do it at the dealer since you have no idea if they are selling you snake oil. If you want a permanent coating find a detailer who can apply Optimum Opti-Coat. As a bonus, they can probably buff out those scratches and scuffs. The dealer probably used a filler wax to hide those scratches.

Here's a thread showing the durabilty of Opti-Coat:

I agree. Those paint protectant things are money makers. Want a nice shine and water to bead?.....wax it!

Thank you all for your comments. I'll find a detailer to do the job. I am not happy at all with the Nissan dealership, and try to avoid them as much as I can. The car had few scratches and I didn't notice when I got the car (assuming it is brand new!), and every time I took the car to fix a scratch, they made it worse. One time they bumped the fender into the wall and they painted the entire fender!

Thanks again.

Your dealership may not be great, but if you damage a fender, you need to paint AT LEAST the entire fender. If they had tried to spot-paint it you would be unhappy with the result.

Bought mine with a dealer I'm the second owner on the MO and did the paint protection with them, it does well i think, because since I bought the car 2 Years ago, there still shine without the wax, pretty good for me but some minor scratches on the door handle was worst and didn't go away...

Door handle? That's chrome, so get some light polish like Barkeeper's Friend, use an old t-shirt and polish them out yourself. Note: actual work and patience will be required. You may not get them all the way out, but you can sure make it look nice.
