Default car lost power

My service engine light came on and then it blinked for a sceond and then went off. Then it can back on and my car lost all power. I know there is another post on this, but I was wondering if maybe it could have just been from overdeating? Wll my secutriy-plus protection plan cover this?

I don't think so....

We're having temps in the high 90s and our 2007 SL has no overheating problems.

You didn't give us enough info: year, miles, etc.

You'll need to get the code read with a scan tool. Your dealer will do it under warranty, or most car stores like Autozone will do it for free.

Smittytejas-

Welcome to the forum!!

When I first read you post I thought it said overeating!! I am glad I took the time to read it twice because I had one helluva response to the over-eating problem.

What was the engine temperature guage reading? If it was in the normal range then it was not an over-heating issue.

Is your MO a 2003 - 2005 version? If so, did it ever have the alternator recall performed? Have you checked the electrolyte level in the battery?

Have you been able to restart it? Do any of the lights come on?

Sounds like the same behavior as when the 03-04's lost the alternator, if I remember correctly.

Maybe the same issue.

Seems also like an electronic throttle control problem. You really need to get the car towed to a mechanic and the code read. Internet diagnosing can only do so much in these cases.

okay. so I went and picked up my car tonight and it ran fine. When I got in the neighborhood the light came back on. I checked the fluid and I had way to much oil in the car. I am going to drain the oil tommrow and see what happens. Any other suggestions? I know I am an idiot, but this site is awesome for idiots like me.

That is odd, that is very odd.

The oil dipstick on the MO is notoriously difficult to read. People are always complaining about it. Are you sure the level is high?

Assuming you read the level corectly and it is high, who did your last oil change? If they are close by you might want to have them check it in front of you to have them justify the level.

Yes it is very hard to read, and some idiot (pointing the finger at myself) put oil in the car last week becuase I though it was really low.

I'm not sure if there is a link between the check engine light and too much oil in the crankcase. If anything, too much oil would cause some frothing to occur and your *oil pressure* light might come on, not the CEL.

Joe is right - check the oil after the car has been sitting for more than 30 minutes.

The check engine light usually relates to an emission control device, not a mechanical failure.
