Unhappy Tie rod replacement cost

Hello!
This is a really great forum where I can learn a lot!
A quick question. I brought my Murano 05 to my local tire shop and had 4 new tires.
Atfer that I had a vibration issue and a guy there told me that I have to replace driver side front tie rod.

And it costs little more than $700!!
Is it normal?

Thanks in advance!

oas1s-

Welcome to the forum!

Since the vibration issue started immediately after you replaced the tires I suspect the cause to be a balancing issue.

I recommend having the tires rebalanced, preferably on a Hunter RoadForce machine. It is considered to be one of the best tire balancing machines out there.

Thanks, njjoe & Gonzo.

I bought Cooper CS4 and had wheel balance & alignment twice because of that issue.
Now they told me there is a tie rod problem.

Wow, so it is about $700.......for the tie rod....
They didn't say specifically bearing, and in
& outer tie rods, but I assume that $700 covers everyting...

Thanks again.

Lots of tie rods on ebay under $50. Someone is getting ripped off!

- Check the tires - try rotating front to back, back to front. See if it drives smoothly then.

- If no joy, get a tie rod quotation from an independent shop.

- Consider doing it yourself - tie rods are pretty easy.

- Napaonline.com, autozone.com and rockauto.com are all parts sources.

Rockauto gets from $26 to $42 for the part - I ABSOLUTELY would not pay anyone $700 to install it!

The mechanic actually told (during the test drive) me it is about 1~1.5hours job and the part doesn¡¯t cost a lot.
BUT the guy who charged me $700 told me it¡¯s 6 hours job and the part for my Murano costs very expensive!
They even asked me to replace both of front tie rods at the first time¡¦

Pilgrim is right; try rotating the tires from front to back. You may have a defective tire. Although rare, it is plausible one of the tires may have a bad belt.

This guy is not just a thief, he's a $%#$)$# highway robber. NEVER go there again. He's a crook. Everything he told you is a bald-faced lie.

This is a reason that it's a good idea to learn basic mechanics - it makes it much harder to get away with telling you such a big lie. Yes, modern engines are very computer-controlled, but things like brakes, tie rods and bearings are no different than they were 20 years ago.

Yes! That 's what I did before I really ready to spend $$$.
After rotating front & back, most of noise were gone(there were even noise...don't know what's wrong with CS4) but the vibration is still there.

I also thought there might be a defective tire and that's why couple of ploblems happened simultaneously after changing tires.

I was just not sure how to convince them there might be a problem with new tire. Of course they never admitted.

I guess to prove it, I need to rotate the tire again to show there is noise issue....Oh well~~

I replaced my own tie-rod (outer) (there is also an Inner) with a "dealer" purchased part. The part from my Nissan dealer OEM part was only $71 for the outer end.
It took me about 1.5 hr and marked and measured everything before removal so that I didn't need an alignment afterward.
As others have stated about the "quote" of $700; DRIVE AWAY from them!
I didn't have the issue with vib. like yours. Mine was more of a "shifting" from side-to-side "feel" while driving on the highway. You can really feel it while changing lanes; the steering tended to drift.
However, if the wheels are off balanced in the slightest; you will feel the effects of that.
Or even if the rotors have a slight warp; you may even feel the effects of that.
I think the key to finding out your issue may be to find a reliable mechanic that will probe the issue methodically.

BikerJohn I'm having a similar problem right now. I was searching for a way to phrase it and created a whole new thread but when I read your post, it was as if you were reading my mind . I'm having that "shifting" from side-to-side on the highway or even cruising on the street going 50 KM/hr. First I thought I'd checked if all tires were at the correct PSI and the left front one was at 30 while the others were at 34 but to no avail. On the highway it is more noticeable. Also during those cold mornings, when I first apply my brakes, there's a rubbing noise I'm hearing and sometimes the car doesn't even react until I really step on the brake pedal. A while back, I did change my rotors and brake pads and eversince this rubbing problem started so I'm not sure if it's related to my side-to-side problem. I haven't had a big look but I now know what to look for:
1) Check if wheels are off balance.
2) If the rotors are warped. ( It hasn't even been 4 months!)
3) Check for tie-rod failure

Anything else I might be missing?

The other possibility are the lower control arms/bushing. This one you will notice more when turning (L or R) into a driveway. You might feel/hear some "clunking" going on if they may be a problem.
