Default Resetting SES light?

Is there a way to reset the Service Engine Soon light myself, or do I need to bring the car to Nissan to have that done? It was a simple process on my '95 Maxima, but I don't have the service manual for the Murano. I did a search but couldn't find anything.

By the way, this is the second time it's happened on my 12,500 mile-old Murano. The first time was at about 1,000 miles and the dealer told me after they reset the computer that it just "went away" and they didn't know why it happened.

Shouldn't you have the code read first, so you know if there is a problem?

Well, my thought was that if I reset the code and it returned, I would bring the car in to the dealer. If it's another "loose gas cap" code, it shouldn't come back, and I won't have wasted my time.

Just as I tried to post the steps, my internet went down. When I get home tonight I'll post it, unless someone else is quicker.

I haven't actually tried to check codes this way, but you get a read out of the code before you erase it. It's the only way to do it without a scan tool.

Note that you can read the code by counting the light pulses in diagnostic mode 2. Each on-off blink is added to a max of 10 (= 0) with larger offs between each of the 4 digits. Each 4 digit code is separated by an even larger off.

Tyler...thanks again. I reset the code last night and the light has not returned at this point.

The error code was "456" as far as I can tell. Any idea what this refers to? I was unable to find a list of codes anywhere.

Ahah. It's code P0456. I bet the dealers see a lot of this one:

Very Small Leak Detected in Evaporative Emission Control System.

Your gas cap was probably loose.

Exactly what happened the first time, which is why I wanted the procedure to clear the code.

Thanks again! You saved me a trip to my dealership.

There has been the occasional problem where even when the cap is tight the code is triggered. One person had the dealer "reduce the sensitivity" so that the problem wouldn't keep reccurring. You might want to check into this if you know the cap is being tightened properly. Note that the cap should be "clicked" at least once to reduce this problem.

Be careful with that P0456 code.
There is a TSB out that instructs the dealer to check out the code and, if there is NOT a "small leak", to reprogram the computer.

The TSB also has a warning that, if the steps are not followed to a T, the computer could go belly up and will need to be replaced.

If anyone is facing the reprogramming scenario, they need to ask the dealer to make DAMNED sure that a replacement is on hand. Not just availabe, but ON HAND.

Or you could find yourself in this predicatment.

Thanks, Unc. As it turns out, the SES light came on again last night, so it's heading to the dealership next week. I'll keep that valuable information in hand when I turn over the keys.

Well, I didn't get a chance to bring it to Nissan, and the SES light went out about 7 days after it came on. Hasn't come back, so I'm assuming it was a loose gas cap. Time will tell...
