Hi NJJoe,
I have a 2010 Murano and recently had a routine oil change done at a Mr. Good Lube on Route 9 (I reside in Howell). They indicated that I could use a new air filter so for an extra $20 I said no problem. It just seems to sound very loud now when I step on the gas and accelerate. Sounds like an exhaust type sound, almost as if the car was/is laboring a little. At first I thought I had her in neutral and not drive. It's a lease and I have 25k miles on it. The general warranty is 3yrs/36k miles but if I bring it to the dealer for service I dont know if they would bang me out. I'm hoping you might have some suggestions. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Happy New Year! Thanks Mdig |

Welcome to the forum.
I think this is the first time in six years that I read a post specifically addressed to me. I'm not sure how to respond. All kidding aside, did you detect a change in engine noise immediately after the oil was changed? If so, then I would bring it back to Mister Good Lube and have them check their work. I'd make sure they replaced the filter, and did not simply remove the old one. If the noise continues to get worse then I would bring it to your local Nissan dealer. Since you are still covered by the B2B warranty you should not have to worry about out-of-pocket expenses. -njjoe

I think he prefers your answer more than ours.... Now I feel jealous..... LOL
Seriously though, he is right! You have very good and sound judgement and also have images/pics most times to back it up. Good Job Joe ! My two cents... I have experiences with quick lube at Mr Lube and their not the very best as most times, these outlets are staffed by students learning the trade or new apprentices... so they probably screwed up somewhere... You say its just an oil change... well good and great car maintenance starts with lube and its a very important one at that ! |

When I changed my oil last week I took a look at the air filter to see if it needed replacing (it did), and the following morning when I was driving to work I noticed a noise, such as you describe, when accelerating. I had not put the cover on the air filter box back on correctly, and it had a gap on the back side. Check that.
Undo the two clips on front and lift the cover up - there are two 'tabs' on the back of the cover that should fit into corresponding slots, and then you hinge the cover closed and reclip. |

One of my good friends refers to the guys who work at the quick lube places as "Monkey Lads". Any work they do is highly suspect.
For instance, if they change your oil, drive one block, pull over with the engine running, get out and look for oil leaks - because it's not unknown for them to forget to tighten the pan plug or screw down the oil filter. After checking for leaks, turn it off, wait a couple of minutes and pull the dipstick to make sure there's oil in it. Yes, in some cases they have forgotten to put oil in the engine. Finally, replace your own air filters. It's cheaper and it's a 10-minute job. In your case, check the air filter and make sure there IS one. They might have forgotten to put a new one in. That won't hurt anything in the short run, but it could explain the noise.

It does sound like an air filter box improperly sealed - I'd check it myself rather than have those fools who did the work look at it again. A mistake from the oil change place will not be covered under warranty at your Nissan dealer.

Well, what was the verdict? You posted a directed question, five people provided plausible explanations/solutions, and I (we) am curious to know what you found. Was it related to the filter box? Inquiring minds want to know. ![]() -njjoe

Hey NJJoe & Guys,
Sorry I didnt respond sooner. You guys nailed it. It was the air filter box. They never correctly sealed it or closed it at that Mr GoodLube. I brought it to Nissan to make an appt but the tech guy popped the hood and sealed it in about 5 seconds. The sound went away. I'm a moron when it comes to automotive stuff so hopefully I can pick the brains of the many helpful people on this site. Thanks again and Happy New Year to all. mdig |
