Default Follow up on the CVT replacement

I AM NOT BACK!

Got the car back this morning. CVT was replaced. Found a total of 5 DROPS of oil on the garage floor. Took it to Beaverton Nissan. They said it could be either an engine main seal leak ($2K) or a transmission seal (warranty). They took the transmission out (engine still in the car) and found all the seals dry. There was evidence of a leak in the seam of the two halves of the transmisson case, so they replaced it Had to get one from California. Came in yesterday noon, and I was out the door at 10AM today.
When they attempted to reprogram the computers. they couldn't because there was a lot of carbon in the throttle plate. They disassembled and cleaned no charge. Engine runs a lot smoother now.
Also had the belts replaced and the air intake recall done.

So I have a rebuilt CVT, all new seals, air intake and new belts, total out oif pocket $159.
And they gave me a 2012 Rogue to use for a week....

2003, mileage 84000.

Okay, you are not back and I am not replying to your post.

I am glad you were able to take advantage of the extended warranty. A $5,000 repair bill would be tough to swallow on a nine-year-old car with 84,000 miles.

What blows my mind is that a factory-rebuilt CVT (I assume JATCO-USA is rebuilding the CVTs) was not properly sealed. Someone apparently needs to work on emphasizing quality control.

It bothers me that a transmission would be hard to seal. Fer cryin' out loud, what's so hard about building a tranny case that can be sealed easily? I wonder if it was one of those tube-applied silicone seals and someone just forgot the silicone.

There are some very attractive silicone housings on the tube every now and then.

I am sitting at the dealership now waiting for my front transfer and rear diff to be serviced. I get it done religiously to avoid the possibility of fluid starvation and inevitable failure. Hey maybe they will find a CVT leak as well and I'll get a new transmission. 2003 SE AWD with 87,000 miles here. Not many of us left here as original owners of 2003's.

Hey Eric, be careful what you wish for.

My "overqualified" service manager informed me that the CVT warranty only covered internal parts. My leaky seal was estimated to cost $1,300 to repair.

I wanted to stay in the club.......

I wish you were kidding. The only thing worse than an improperly sealed factory-rebuilt CVT from JATCO-USA would be an improperly sealed factory-built CVT from JATCO.

Granted, yours is an isolated incident but when a factory-fresh unit has seal problems what can we expect from one after a few hundred, or few thousand operating cycles??

I love my MO, I really do, and the CVT is a big part of it. I feel the smoothness of the CVT is light-years ahead of any conventional automatic transmission, but the fear of a $5,000 repair is unsettling. If it were not for the CVT's extended warranty my MO would have been history at the 5-year mark.

Good luck (again) with your new CVT.

Well now I am watching two techs and one service manager standing underneath the car pointing a flashlight at something. I guess they are amused at the Fumoto valve. What a lousy way to spend my day off!

Yeah, but at least you are sharing it with us. We miss you around here.

I can not begin to tell you how many times a new member posts a question and when I search for the answer I find it in one of your old posts.

Hey, look on the bright side, at least they have wifi in the waiting room.

Just been crazy busy lately and haven't had much time for the forums.

So now I've watched them put the MO up on the lift, take it down, back up, take it down. No idea what they are doing now. Must have stuck the rookie tech on my car.

Maybe it's not your MO. Maybe it's just a new lift and they are testing it out.

Finally off the lift. Now on its way to the wheel alignment rack.

Things did not end well. I drove home in a rental Camry. Will start a new thread, and will require the smart folks here to make a few guesses on what happened.

Joe, you'll have a blast reading this... Throttle body failure.
