Synthetic Oil

I saw a phrase in my 2004 Murano's owner's manual that said to use fossil oil.

Does anyone know if Nissan does not want synthetic oils used?
I've use Mobil 1 in previous vehicles and have had no problems.

Do a search and you will see that many forum members have switched to synthetic oil and have experienced no ill effects.

Most people wait until the second or third oil change before switching over to syn.

I always take my own synthetic oil to dealer and have them use it during oil change. They have never told me I could not or should not use synthetic.

I've been running synthetic since 2003. No ill effects. I'll venture to say that my Murano runs as good as it does because I used synthetic, not fossil oil. Most will agree with this.

Since I'm using synthetic I skip every other oil change. So instead of changing every 3750, I change every 7500 or so. I do change the oil filter every 3750, though... mostly because I'm afraid of it getting gummed up. All this anal-retentiveness makes the MO happy :P

Nissan does not officially recommend synthetic oil for a few reasons.

1) There are many brands of synthetic oil out there. Most are perfectly fine (they have the API and starburst on it). However, I'm sure those miracle cures (that don't work) like Slick50 and Duralube are also synthetic formulas, and I can see why Nissan would not recommend those. You would be surprised how naive many owners are, and they think that stuff is "synthetic oil" in the league of Mobil One or Castrol Syntech.

2) Using conventional oil means more frequent oil changes, leading to more $tealership visits, leading for more opportunities for them to $crew you over with unnecessary $ervices.

But BMW and Porsche come standard with Mobil One you say. Well those owners are also used to paying $1000+ for normal service intervals whenever they go in, not something your average Nissan owner will likely enjoy.

While viewing the Mobil1 website I found this interesting tidbit:

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology will not void new car warranties, with the exception of the Mazda rotary engine (Mazda does not recommend any synthetic motor oil).

I am sure it must have something to do with the composition of the seals.

That's interesting. The Mobil 1 website neglects to mention the Nissan 350Z.

Maybe Mobil 1 felt stiffed by Nissan for not including Mobil 1 in the Murano.

Thanks for the info.
I've got 10K mile on my 2004 Mo and next oil change (I do them myself, it's easy especially with the oil filter being easy to get at) I plan on using Mobil 1. I've been using Castrol fossil 5W30 with no problems.

While I believe that if you change your oil every 3000 miles or so, it really doesn't matter if you synthetic or not. I will say I've been running mobil one synthetic in my corvette since new and when you look into the cylinder head opening (oil fill) the thing is as clean as can be. It has about 50K miles on it. I recently changed the MO over to Castrol full synthetic for this reason. Also I tend to extend my change interval over the winter as I don't like laying under a car when its cold out. Also the Nissan Dealer uses Castrol so if I do have them change the oil during other service they will use the same brand.

i think what he meant is $1000 for regular service interval *after* the free maintenance program has expired. However, my sister owned an BMw before and she told me it was around $300+ for an oil change this and that as long as it is not the 30,000 and 60,000 miles interval.

I wasn't making this up. But you are right regarding the included maintenance while under warranty (however, its pretty minimal maintenance.)

Read Edmunds.com's report on their long term BMW 530i for an idea of what is involved in these $1000 service intervals.

One might wonder, with all these mfgrs (including Nissian in a VQ 350Z) using synthetic right out of the box, whether the "break in" with petroleum is still necessary.
Modern machining techniques seem, in the minds of some, to indicate not.
