2004 Murano SE

1st transfer case cracked, Murano dead/stalled in traffic miles 10K
2nd transfer case cracked, Murano dead/stalled in traffic miles 33K
3rd transfer case cracked, Murano dead/stalled in traffic miles 83K

Just a note
rear differential split, Murano dead/stalled in traffic miles 80K

It seems that Nissan has a problem designing and building mechanically simple devices. This issue is not only a financial issue ($8500 in the last 2 months) but more importantly a safety issue. Each time I had a failure it was catastrophic and left me unable to move the Murano out of traffic. Fortunately traffic was moving slowly and resulted in no accidents. If it had been at highway speed it would have been another story. Also dumping all that oil on the road when the failure happen doesn’t help the safety situation.

eddy_bell-

That may just be the worst tale of woe I have seen on this forum. Three transfer case failures on one MO!! That is most definitely a record. The failed rear differential just takes the cake.

Has Nissan been helpful at all with your situation?

Good luck with the new x-fer case.

Did Nissan ever explain why the part kept on failing? I hate it when dealers just give you a generic "mechanical failure" or "internal failure" without a reason why it broke.

Interesting how alot of failures are wit the 2003 and in Canada. I think like most problems with the Mo, you need to take into account the year and location to be objective.

Well, given that you could only buy AWD Muranos for the first year (or two?) in Canada, that's part of it. No transfer case to fail on a lot of the 2003 U.S. Muranos. Also, the newer ones are for the most part not getting up to the mileage where the transfer cases are failing... yet.

No, when asked for some help they said "Nissan declines to help with this issue" I plan to see if there is any legal recourse. I will also see if there is any way to force a recall because of the safety issue and because of the number of people that have had this issue. If I file legal action then on discovery I will be able to find out the real number of transfer cases that have failed.

IMO the part is evidently weak and under designed for the task at hand. Such a part should just not fail period. All the manufacturers with this acceptable % of failures is just self-serving c*** IMO.

Hi there
Just bought a used 03 SE AWD. Noticed a small drop of oil on the ground approximately in the center part of the engine. Also noticed a faint oil smell occasionally. The inspection that was done showed no oil leaks. Is this what every one is talking about with regards to the transfer case and what's the cost to repair?
Thanks
Marty

No it was cracked, which is why they've taken the bite out of the AWD with the new controller and switch. It's underdesigned.

Not only is that an issue, when it cracks, it can stress the transmission case and damage it as well.

The dealer told me how they preferred to change both, but Nissan was backing off and only changing the transfer case, then waiting to see if that cured it.

For mine, it still leaked after the transfer case replacement and controller downgrade to the newer one.

I traded it in after a month and a half of waiting. The Nissan Dealer called me another month or so after that to tell me the parts were in. I told them to call the Dodge dealer that had it up for sale.

Well as it turned out I had a seal leak at the transfer case and the left axle. Thank goodness it was covered under warranty. I have 89000km. They did a thorough inspection of the transfer case and found no problems.

57-

Hmmm.... The left-front axle does not connect to the transfer case. It's actually the trans-axle assembly.
