Windows Go Down By Themselves?

Here's a new one! Twice now I've gone out into the garage in the morning and found both front windows all the way down. They were up when I parked it for the night. Anybody had that happen? Sure wouldn't want to find that in a hotel parking lot in the morning!

I have had the windows-going-down-by-themselves problem about three or four times in the last two years. It's a 2003 model, and therefore, out of warranty. I've chalked it up to space aliens or other random electrical signals, but when it happened this morning when it was 28 degrees, I decided to use Google to check out if others have had this problem. I have found this instance and one other.
Has anyone taken this to a dealer and had them fix it -- especially if beyond warranty?

This problem can be traced back to "operator error" 99.9% of the time.

Take the key fob out of your pocket; now press and hold the "Unlock" button. After about 5 seconds the front windows will roll down. Neat, huh? Unfortunately, pressing and holding the "Lock" button will not roll the windows back up.

The "Unlock" button is not well protected and it is easy for it to be accidentally pressed when you are carrying it around in you pocket. You can see what happens if it is inadvertently pressed.

Find another place to keep the fob and everything should be fine.

Thanks for your complete and courteous reply. I guess in my experimenting, I only held down on the Unlock for 3 seconds (applicable to my former Lexus RX 300) instead of 5.

woke up and went out to take my dad for some outpatient surgery. Found both front windows were open all night. Not a good thing in Florida with the rain and all.

Did you read my previous post in this thread? It's not the MO's problem, doc. You're the one who is causing the front windows to roll down. Read the post, then apologize to your MO.

Hi everyone. I've got a similar problem, and I'm 100% positive that it's not operator error.

Often I'll hit the unlock button on my key fob (just a click, not holding it down) and when the car unlocks the windows will go down. When I'm done driving and I turn off the car, the windows automatically go back down when I open the door. Note that this happens only AFTER 1) the key is out of the ignition and 2) the door is open. For example, I can turn off the car and take the key out, but the windows will stay up until I open the door. But as soon as I open the door, the windows drop. Similarly, if I leave the key in the ignition and open the door, the windows will stay up. It's only when I remove the key that they suddenly drop down.

Once it happens, the only process I've found to get the windows to stay up (thus allowing me to leave my car knowing it's secure) is by 1) giving the car power so I can roll them up and then 2) clicking lock and then unlock, either on the key fob or the door panel. Then the windows will stay up.

Anyone have more info on this problem or any advice for dealing with the dealership? I've already brought it in and they "couldn't duplicate the problem", so nothing was done. I've taken a few videos of the problem (it happens about 30-40% of the time -- five times in a single weekend), so the next time I go in I'm going to hand them a DVD and say "There it is. Plain as day. Now fix it."

Anything else I can tell them that might help me bypass red tape or standard (slow) procedures?

I'm also considering purchasing an extended 7-year service plan from the dealer, because this doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy about the health of the car's electrical/computer systems.

It sounds like an electrical "gremlin". Your best chance of getting it fixed is to find a way to consistently duplicate the problem so you can show it to the dealer. Unfortunately, you are at their mercy.

Insist on them watching YOU repro the problem, and try it several times with the service manager there watching you. Of course, Murphy will probably come into play, but it's worth a shot.

The service techs usually only try ONCE to repro something. They'd much rather say "no repro" and do no work rather than have decent customer service. So you have to make them watch you do it. Then, if it happens, you can make them document that they saw the problem, so if they don't fix it the first time it shouldn't be a "could not reproduce" problem.

Have I mentioned before that I hate Nissan service departments?
