Angry They Reset My Oil Change Monitor Without Asking!!

Greetings fellow MURANO-ITES!!

I am hoping you can help this VERY unhappy camper.
I am the proud owner of a 2007 SL AWD GLACIER PEARL MURANO which I acquired in January.
Needless to say -- I love this car -- in fact I am moving to Europe and taking it with me.
Anyhow -- I went to the dealership as my TPM (!) light came on, and they also suggested a 1000 mile oil change -- so I did.
However..... they reset the OIL CHANGE MONITOR on the screen back to -0- without asking!!
I wanted it to keep with the mileage I put on the car so that everything would remain meticulously accurate.
Now the screen doesn't match the mileage and it is driving me nuts!
I wanted everything to remain perfect and continuous!
Of course when I called the dealer on it (as they also did not repair the TPM light, came back within an hour) -- the response was basically nothing.
If ANYONE out there has any ideas as to HOW to RESET the OIL CHANGE MONITOR to correlate with the mileage I have on the car PLEASE let me know --- it's one of those little things that is going to drive me nuts!!

Thanks in Advance!!

I don't think it's possible. You will be in nutsville shortly.

Random questions:

Why did they do a 1,000 mile oil change?

Why do you want your maintenance odometer to match your odometer odometer?

Do you know you have 4 other odometers in the car? Do you want all of them to match your main odometer? If so, why?

Glad your TPM issue got worked out though.

Good Luck in Europe.

Actually, your dealer did the right thing by resetting the maintenance reminder. Some forget to do so and it can be annoying.

I doubt there is any way to undo the reset.

Out of curiosity, do you plan on keeping all of your trip odometers calibrated the same?

A 1,000 mile oil change? That is very odd. The only way they could justify that is if your MO was at least three months old and they based it on time and not mileage.

I've heard before that for a "new" vehicle it's good to get the oil changed after the first 1000 miles, as there can be some initial wearing of the engine parts and that first batch of oil can get contaminated quite quickly.

HOWEVER, I believe that for most vehicles these days, that is completely unnecessary.

Of course, it also can't hurt. So when you've just shelled out (or went into debt) for a $35,000 vehicle, doing a $25 oil change after the first 1000 miles really isn't a big deal.

I agree with the other posters, you WANT your oil change reminder to be reset when they do an oil change. That is really its purpose. You have the odometer, two trip meters, the tire rotation meter, and the oil change meter. All of those meters are linked into the overall odometer, so they'll all go at the same rate. I don't really see the point of having multiple odometers all saying the same thing, but then I might be missing your point.

What would be a bigger deal, in my opinion, is if they reset the "MPG" statistics. If you're wanting to maintain those for the life of the car, then it would be really irritating.

By the way, does anyone know which of these settings (if any) get reset when the battery is disconnected? That might be useful info to know.

If they get reset at that point, then there's no way that you'd be able to keep these settings in the long-term anyway. Eventually your battery will be disconnected for some reason, and you'd be SOL.

The oil change/tire rotation settings do not get reset when the battery gets disconnected.

All I remember from the alternator replacement was the radio stations were MIA.

Meticulously accurate?? You do realize that by not resetting the reminder the screen would have been inaccurate.

Out of curiosity, do you ever intend to use the trip odometers or do you also want them to remain in sync with the main odometer?

Usha,

I know exactly how you feel. I was the same way, before I reset the damn thing myself. Doh!

I think what Usha was thinking is that he could leave the mileage to match the car and change the oil mileage internal milage to 3000 miles beyond that. It is really just another way of looking at it.

Usha, once you get use to it, you will see that it makes more sense than the other way.

As far as the 1000 mile oil change goes, I would highly recommend it. During the break in period of any engine, the oil consumption can be significant. If the car has been sitting oni the lot for some time, the engine dried up a little allowing for more oil consumption.

I had my wife's car oil change after 4000 miles and the mechanic indicated that the oil was half full - or half empty, depending on how you want to look at. She doesn't drive the vehicle much so that is why it ended up using so much oil, initially.

At the least, I would suggest checking your oil regularly prior to your next 3000 mile oil change.

Sounds like you need an Excel spread sheet that tracks your maintenance.... hmmmm.

I too changed my oil at 1,000 miles. Beter safe than sorry and given the build date of my MO and my purchase date it had been a number of months. Small cost for piece of mind.

I'm not sure I even understand the complaint. The oil change monitor is meant to be reset after every change, so it begins counting up from zero again, and when it hits 3000, 5000, 7500, or whatever interval you use, it will beep to remind you its time to change the oil. Not sure why you would want to never reset it - you can use the odometer exactly the same way.

As for the TPMS light, did you try inflating your tires, or was it malfunctioning even with your tires well over 27-28psi (the trigger for the TPMS light)? I believe the manufacturer's recommended pressure is 33psi F/R. If the light keeps on coming on even with your tires properly inflated, I'd point it out as a bad sensor.

So sue me!

Kind of off topic, but I picked up a scantool, an Equus 3130, last week - very cool - it can even display live data as you drive the car. Want to know the ignition timing between premium and regular unleaded - this thing tells you!
