Default Do you use seatbelts?

Recently the Governer of New Jersey, Jon Corzine, was in an auto accident and suffered numerous injuries that were directly attributed to his decision to not wear a seat belt. He was a passenger in the car and broke twelve ribs, his thigh bone, collarbone, sternum, and a lower vertebra. It is no coincidence that the driver, who wore his seat belt, walked away.

We are now being blitzed with the "Click it or ticket" campaign aimed at catching drivers and front-seat passengers who fail to use seatbelts.

I have been wearing a seatbelt ever since I bought my first car - an MG Midget. Back then I figured the seat belt would make it easier for the rescue workers to find my body, because the Midget sure as hell was not going to offer any crash protection. Now I won't back out of the driveway without being buckled up.

How do you guys feel about seatbelts?

I, for the most part, would wear my seatbelt in the past.

Now with kids, I never forget.

Default yep

My kids never complained about seatbelts; to them it was like closing the door, you have to do it before the car moves.
They got that from me. I wear it every time, they wear it every time.

That Gov musta been quite a dull crayon.

I have always worn my seatbelt, got my wife into the habit and with my kids, it is second nature. In Alberta it is the law, however, we still get stories on people that get killed by being ejected through the windshields every year. It amazes me that some people still think that a seatbelt is not required for safety.

Buckling my seat belt is the second thing I do after I get in the car and shut the door. Locking the doors is the first thing. I require all passengers in my car to also fasten their seat belts before I will start the engine.

Neither Princess Diana nor Dodi were wearing seat belts, and it almost certainly contributed to their demise.

Default You might be surprised to know....

That seatbelt provide over 85% of the injury protection in a frontal crash with the airgbag only reducing the injuries another 15%. These are averages and indivual cars vary a bit. I do not have the specifics for the MUrano.

In the rear seats, SuV sets belts are being phased out with inflatable seatbelts to provide frontal protection for the first time for rear passangers. This starts with Ford in 2009.

Even though I really don't like them, I always use it. Believe it or not the biggest motivator should be safety but for me it's fear of the cop sitting there waiting to nail someone without a seat belt. It's a fine in my state to drive without a seat belt.
It's really a no brainer when you realize that you will avoid a more serious injury in the event of a crash.

I had a friend who used to ONLY wear their seat-belt when on the highway (or basically speeds over 40mph). Said that it hindered their ability to get in and out of the car fast when he needed to around town, siting the fact that if someone wants to car-jack you it's better if you don't have your belt on.

Then he was in a parking lot and got into a little fender-bender. A parking lot. Going slow. Very slow. Both cars. Just enough of a jostle to make his head slam against the windshield, but not enough to set off the airbag.

He was OK, but had a cut on his head and a broken windshield, and when the cop showed up he instantly knew that my friend didn't have his seatbelt on. No question about it, it wouldn't have happened if he had his belt on.

Ever since then, he wears it religiously. He was amazed that such a small "bump" could send him that far forward with enough force to crack the windshield with his head. Imagine if that had been a 30mph head-on collision rather than a 5mph bump?

On one hand I think it's good that they're really cracking down on the whole seatbelt issue. On the other hand, I think Darwin had some good points...

Always! I use to drive my Z281LE to work and it had a 5-point driver's harness. I driver-schooled that car. Even a 'normal' seatbelt will keep you in place, allowing you to maneuver the vehicle more accurately.

Our son learned thru our habit and he would not start the car until all passengers were buckled up.

i came to north america in 2000 and got the seat belt ticket on my way to hotel room ( university arranged a pickup for me) the VERY FIRST HOUR ON ROAD..... it taught me a lesson which i will never forget....

now, 7 years later i never forget seatbelt... for me its like putting the car into drive. i was getting out of my driveway one day with my 2 yr old daughter in the booster seat and she almost screamed that i forgot to do something with belt (she had it in her hand).....

it still amazes me that so many people die because of not wearing seat belt......

For the life of me, I cannot think of any excuse not to wear a seatbelt. If you think it restricts you to the point where you cannot drive a car, you have other much more serious problems and shouldn't be driving a car.

Thumbs up

I tell you that you will learn to appreciate a seat belt once you've been in a accident. The seat belt saved my life when I nodded off behind the wheel after working grave yard shift. I ran into a the back of a pickup truck around 45 mph, and walked away from it without a scratch. 97 maxima a well built car!!
