Sponsored Checking Knock Sensor

How can i check if my knock sensor is functioning properly. I have a multimeter and i know i have to check the resistivity (or something like that). Can i easily have access to the knock senor connector?

cavemangh-

The MO would generate an error code if the knock sensor was not functioning properly. The codes would be either 0327 (low voltage) or 0328 (high voltage).

The knock sensor is located on the top of the engine under the intake manifold. It is certainly not the easiest sensor to access.

Why do you suspect a defective knock sensor?

Yes i suspect that my knock sensor is not functioning properly though i have not yet read any codes. I noticed that sometimes the car performs very well, with or without high octane fuel. Infact I noticed today after buying a lower octane fuel that the car felt more responsive and had no knocking. i hear the "pings" especially when the weather is very hot.

I wish there was a way of just pullin out the connector (two pin, i think) and just checking the resistance before deciding to replace it. The other thing i can do is to have the codes read. This is pretty expensive in Ghana.

When does engine Knock become unacceptable?

The manual says light pinging is OK. I can hear the can of marbles with my windows down only(under light acceleration as the CVT begins to drop engine revs-as in transitioning from the torque converter)and when there is no other traffic.

I always use Shell premium.

A knock sensor uses a peizio-electric crystal to generate a voltage signal when it detects a knock. Unlike a conventional sensor that uses a magnet and can be tested with an ohm meter, a knock sensor has no resistance value and in fact generates electricity so you would need a volt meter to check it otherwise you will fry your ohm meter. Most volt/ohm/amp meters are all in one, just make sure to only check the knock sensor in the Voltage setting.

The knock sensor is under the lower intake manifold but the wiring harness comes out the bottom and into another Green (i think) connector between the cylinder heads above the CVT if i remember right.

But if you have no codes for a knock sensor, i think you should be ok. Granted a knock sensor won't set a check engine light but will store itself in the ECM but won't cause an emissions failure if it is bad.

hook up your tester and get a metal object and tap on the motor, if you see the voltage change then shes a workin.
