Nissan and many manufacturer's go with the 5W30 as with 5W30, miles per gallon of gas can be better. Of course the manufacturer is very consumed lets say in advertising high(er) miles per gallon in regard to their vehicle. With that said, you can use 5W30, 10W30. Either would suit your needs even in relation to your geographical location and your Murano. I myself who spends pretty equal time in NY and Florida use either 5W30 or 10W30 though grab 5W30 if available.
Suggestion for others with freebe oil changes left.. Save those freebe oil changes they owe you for down the road/in a few months. Use them when it is colder there or for when you just don't have time to do it yourself... or you are traveling and need an oil change. Do the oil change coming up yourself. You probably can use your freebe oil changes and tire rotations at any participating Nissan dealership... the dealership you go to pulls up your Vin# and it shows you have one of two of your 2 freebe tire rotations and how many freebe oil changes you have left. They will be glad to oblige you. Your selling Nissan dealer does not usually volunteer the info that you can go to any participating Nissan dealer for the freebe Maintenance+Plus Bronze Service Plan "Basic" 1 often given for free to Nissan buyers at time of purchase. I save my freebes for when I am out of state, on the road and need a rotation or oil change. Check your Nissan purchase paperwork given to you at time of purchase. Look for a pamphlet that is labeled "Maintenance+Plus. p.s. I use the word free/freebe loosely. Nothing is free in reality at a stealership.

For filters (oil and air, although I recently switched air to the k&n) I use exclusively Purolators Pure1 and have for years.
As far as viscosity I use Mobil 1 0w30 in Wisconsin year round. Also have used for years.(5w30/0w30) Although I've been tempted by the new Penzoil Platinum but I had a really terrible experience where I lost an engine to bad dino Penzoil years ago (around 1998) so I dont know if I'd ever go back. But bob the oil guy seems to like it. I've also kept great records as to time/mileage/receipts/filter #s for my services so if I ever sell the car down the road, the person who owns it will have a record of it (And hopefully see that I use better stuff than the dealer)

I decideed to go with the Mobil 1 5W-30 and also went with their oil filter too. It was about twice as heavy as that Fram...if that's any indication of filtration efficiency. For me the kicker is watching the oil levels when the temps climb to the high 90s and low 100s....watching for declining oil levels that might suggest the need for higher viscosity.
I was unaware that Nissan's freebies were entered into a database that could be accessed from other dealerships.....the one that gave me the freebie oil changes is over 40 miles away....the local one is 5 miles, but I ended up driving out to the place I bought the car to get the freebie....when you consider an 80 mile round trip at about 20 mpg, that was 4 gallons at $4 per gallon or $16 when I could have driven 5 miles and had it done if they had told me....but the service folks want to get you in there and look for fanbelt cracks and other wear items that they can suggest you take care of whilt you're there for the freebie. That was my last freebie anyway, so from now on, I do my own with the Mobil. I'm going to track the mileage and see if there's any discernable difference when using the Mobil 1 over the whatever-it-was they used prior to this. Do any of you use that bar graph on the fuel economy screen? It tracks you last ten or so tanks of gas and displays them in a consecutive bar graph so you can see how you've been driving over an extended period of time. I can see that I changed my "Porsche habits" considerably from when I first bought the MO....My initial tanks were about 15-16 mpg...then gradually increased to the 17-21/23 depending upon the amount of freeway driving. I have a heavy foot, but it's gettng lighter over time.

Maybe we should start a new discussion for the filters and such! Actually I have used Mobil 1 filters on other cars when they were free with a diy oil change from advance auto or somewhere like that. I've heard they are actually really good filters but usually I'm turned off by their relatively high price compared to the Pure 1 filter.
I find its somewhat hard to lighten my foot. I've never driven an electric motor throttle body and I find the pedal a little touchy from a stop. I always feel like I have to apologize when there are new people in the car because I feel that I'm giving them whiplash. My foot barely steps down on the pedal!

I find the "drive by wire" technology harder to gauge accelerator pressure on take off...there's a tendency for the car to suddenly lurch forward as opposed to the cars I've owned that had the mechanical throttle cables and I was able to more gradually apply gas....but I guess now almost everyone has gone to the elctronic accelerator. A sign of the times....everything goes thru the ECU.

Spend the money on the K&N if you wish. I'm still suspicious, and have tried one in a Blazer with no benefit at all. Sold it to someone who wanted it.
I'm like Chuck - used Amsoil and Mobil 1 for more than 30 years. My last oil change (last weekend) was Mobil 1 10/30 because it was in the 5-quart jug on sale. It will be just fine in the Murano.

i have used K&N filters for years. never had a HUGE hp increase, but i have notice a little MPG improvement. over oiling is the main issue with them. people add so much oil it messes things up. the only problem i ever had was with a V10 triton ford i had. the oil would mess up the IAC, so every morning i would have to open the hood and hit it with a maglight to "reset" it so the damn thing would idle when cold.
WRX, Porsche 928, Murano, Blazer, Altima, Ram Diesel, never a problem. follow the oiling directions. you're good. |

I use K&N air filters in ALL (vehicles of the past- 04 Merc Mountaineer Premier, 07 Mazda Cx7 Grand Touring, 04 Ford F150...) of my vehicles including my boat. I have noticed a significant gain in fuel mileage in every vehicle. The lifetime warranty doesnt hurt either.

1) What is a "significant gain"? 2) When those vehicles get to around 150K miles, how much oil are they using? That's my reservation about K&N - that they let more particulate matter through and it results in more engine wear.

The mpg gain in each vehicle has been slightly different as can be expected. I would say I've seen a rough average of 2-3 mpg increasing. My husbands F150 had a lesser gain at around 2mpg, than my Mountaineer which was showing a 3mpg gain until the day I traded it in (89k). My Cx7 was just above 2mpg (50k when I traded it), as well. I guess to me thats significant because I drive a lot so it adds up. I have never owned a vehicle with 150k on it so I wouldnt know lol..... Maybe I'll get 150 out of the old Murano and have an answer for you in a couple of years.
