Default 800 miles on the odo - too soon for road trip??

I've seen the various threads on break-in procedures and I know the manual recommends a 1200 mile period of keeping it under 4000 RPMs and varying the speed/RPM. We plan to go on a road trip this weekend and the MO is our "trip car." We're talking about 5 hours each way of highway driving. How detrimental would this be? Have about 800 miles so far.

You'll be just fine. All that break-in stuff is old school. you wouldnt be going over 4k RPM unless you were doing a hundred!..lol...and you'll be varying speeds anyhow.

Haha thanks, I wasnt so worried about keeping it under 4,000 RPM, more about the varying speed thing. I hope to set the cruise to around 75-80 and leave it be.

Not a good idea to run on cruise with that low a mileage engine. At about 1k you should be fairly safe, but you want to vary the speed not sit at one rpm for a long time. Otherwise drive it like ya stole it!!

If I'm not using cruise, but I'm averaging around 75 mph for a few hours, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, is that going to be enough of a difference in RPMs? Seems to me that when the transmission is in the highest "gear" (since it has no actual gears) it's going to keep those revs pretty steady.

Assumed that you were going to “set the cruise at 75" which was the point I was trying to make. If you're intending to cruise averaging about 75-80, heck, that's the way I've driven my 09 Mo since new, and no issues with it. We've done several 3k+ mile trips and have seen triple digit speeds in the Nevada “outback”. I did however, wait till I had about 1k miles in the Mo before pushing it too hard or reaching those triple digits.

Cool, thanks for the tips. I will lay off the cruise control, based on your suggestion, but otherwise not worry about the highway speeds. We'll be driving primarily in Georgia, and so I'll be keeping it just under 80 anyhow (nasty "super speeder" fines down here) - no triple digit speeds!!
