Default Mid Grade Gas In Nissan Murano

Have an 05 Murano (SL AWD), bought new in 05. This vehicle has been excellent. Have always used premium gas. My wife put mid grade gas in the tank on last fill up. Since then the engine is clattering/knocking upon acceleration. Any suggestions appreciated.

Well, guess you could go buy a bottle of octane booster at Advance Auto, Walmart, etc. and add it to that tank of gas if you'd like. Otherwise just wait until tank is down and then add the proper octane gas. No damage will occur because of this one tank of low octane gas.... You will see reduced performance because the engine will attempt to adjust to the lower octane gasoline.

Ahhhh... Put premium in the tank at the next fill-up.

Welcome to the forum!

The MO has a knock sensor and will retard the timing if the knocking is severe, so there is no chance of damage.

I run mid grade all the time.... No problems. I'd say run some Techron through it to see off you can reduce any carbon buildup.

i just picked up a murano a few weeks ago for my girlfriend. i had her fill it up and she put regular in. It was running funny, kinda studdering so i looked and realized it needed premium. It runs fine now with a couple tanks of premium in it.

It doesn't need Premium. A properly-tuned MO will run just fine on Regular.

And if you just picked it up and it is "kinda studdering" on regular-grade fuel then I strongly suggest you have the dealer take a look.

^^^I VIGOROUSLY agree with this. That vehicle does not require premium. You may have a bad knock sensor or some kind of timing problem that could result in major damage.

I know from reading my 09 manual that Nissan recommends 91 or better gas be used, which for me is mid grade.

Okay, I just looked at my owner's manual on my 2011 SL. It says 87 octane (anti-knock index) or 91 research octane. A search on the internet says the octane shown on the pumps in the US & Canada is AKI, which to me means I can run regular. I've used regular since day one & it runs fine.

I run regular as well, no appreciable difference in gas mileage or performance :-)

Here are the exact words in the 2009 manual under fuel recommendation:

NISSAN recommends the use of unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 96).

If unleaded premium gasoline is not available, you may use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI number(Research octane number 91), but you may notice a decrease in performance.

Nissan's fuel recommendation for the 2009-10 is different then for the 2011 and 2012 ......

for 2009-10 Murano, at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 96).

For Murano 2011 and 2012, Nissan recommends 87 octane (anti-knock index) or 91 research octane.

Exception .... the MuranoCross Cabriolet requires unleaded premium as your 2009 does... at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 96).

Nissan rates the 2011 and 2012 Murano (not the CC) as making 260hp using the recommended regular 87. For the 2009-2010 Murano, the number is 265hp using the recommended, unleaded premium 91 research octane.

Are you looking what's written under the "fuel recommendation" part or are you looking at the chart in the manual?

My chart says what you are saying but as soon as I found the section were its in writing it says what I posted.

PS. uploading pictures of pages 9-2 and 9-3 so show the discrepancies
