Default Fuel economy….

Drove from Atlanta to Virginia yesterday. There was unusually high number of police cars on the interstate – I85 so all traffic was a little bit slower than usual. I was driving mostly somewhere between 60 – 75 mph. After 340 miles the computer showed 66 mph (including stops, traffic lights etc. and 25.2 mpg! It is 03 Murano, FWD, 70k on the clock. For those complaining about Murano fuel economy – please stop whining!

Is it pretty flat in that area?

Great mileage!

Kris-

I am sure you can thank the police for those great mpg numbers. I have a feeling you'd be running 5 - 10 mph faster if it weren't for the men in blue.

Twenty-five mpg is damn good for a vehicle of that size with 245 hp under the hood. A steady foot is all it takes.

Gonzo,
The terrains is sort of rolling hills. You always drive slightly up or downhill…

Joe,
You are right the amount of men in blue definitely slowed the traffic down. I usually drive 5 – 8 mph above the speed limit. Always on cruise control…it relaxes me…

Now I forgot to mention the temps were ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s. No AC on. Tires – GDY Eagle LS, 10k “old”. Pressure – F35psi, R33psi. Almost no wind except final 50 miles. Oh, and unusually I put normal gas at QT at the start of the trip. I almost exclusively run premium.

You are right Joe, for such a large car, just look at cross section area! this is more than decent result. If somebody is complaining about Murano fuel economy he better get a Prius! You cannot get size, performance, comfort and great fuel economy. Everything is relative…..

I'll keep whining til the day I trade it in..

What's your city mileage btw? Not everyone needs to travel on highways as often as you do.

I just did a trip from North Jersey to Atantic City (South Jersey).. got 22 MPG. yippee!

Anyhow, if that was my normal commute, I would be happy.

BUT it's not.

I took my 20" chrome FX45 wheels and tires off. I was averaging 18.5 mixed city/highway. Now with the factory wheels on I am averaging 23MPG mixed. Really strange. The wheel diameter is equal between the two so the speedometer is on for both wheel/tire packages. I cannot figure this one out.

Another tank of gas and I dropped down to 19.7 this tank. My driving habits and routes taken are the same. I have given up on watching my mileage because this thing is not good on gas period. They need to pull the EPA estimated mileage sticker off because its not even close to real world driving conditions. They need to do this test out doors and in Northern Virginia or Washington DC.

3.5-

The MO's EPA estimates are no less accurate than any other car you could buy.

The AWD MO is listed at 19/24 by the EPA. I usually get anywhere from 16 - 18 around town (never 19) and can easily get 24 on the highway. Coming from a Jeep GC with a V-8 I have no complaints.

You are right about the sticker and how all of them are off. I guess it is a physcological thing when you think in the back of your mind about what the sticker says and what you actually get. I know for a fact that all vehicles burn more gas in the winter probably because of the mixture of additives to the fuel in the winter months and the cold weather.

after a year of driving mine, i can tell you that the mpg readout on the mo (in my car) is never that accurate. in fact, i don't get excited anymore when the computer says that i'm getting 25mpg ave, but at the end of the tank, my calculations always comes out a 1-2 mpg deduction from what the computer gives.

With the stock wheels I get 19.5 Mixed city, highway. and 23 highway at 75MPH average. With my 20" Chrome FX 45 Wheels which weigh 74 Pounds each on my scale with tires, I get 18 mixed and 19.5 highway at 75MPH average (300 Mile trip). This is really strange with the highway difference.

When I look at the difference of how my Murano looks stock verses the infiniti wheels I am forgetting about the mileage difference.

Before

After
