Question Steel rims for winter tires

Hello MO owners,

I have a small question to ask, especially those in Canada (GTA).
I'm looking into winter tires for my '06 SL AWD, and wanted to get steel rims for them.

I have tried Canadian Tire and my dealership, but both told me that there are no steel rims for my car.

So, is it possible to get steel rims for my car or not?
Where would I look for them if yes.

On the other hand, last winter I have seen few Muranos as well as FX35s with steel rims on them, so I'm quite sure that it is possible.

Anyway, any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,
Chris

You can get 17" steel rims. I'm not sure where as I bought mine used. I've used 17 for two winters now as I couldn't find an 18" winter tire that I trusted. I've had no issues with them and you shouldn't either as long as you stay within 3% of the OEM tires, check the tire thread for explanation. Also there is a link on the tire size sticky that will let you know what percentage a different size is. I'll check but I think mine are 275/60/17

Not to be coy, but aren't all Murano rims steel?

Are you looking for unpainted rims? Or, not chromed? Or just a backup set for your winter tires?

How about the 4 SE rims I have in my shed?

Just wondering what your looking for...

hmm...aren't they aluminum rims??? I don't think they are steel...

Anyway, yes, you are correct, I'm looking for a set of rims for winter tires.
How much you want for your rims? I assume they are the stock, 18" rims, right?

Are they really aluminum? I had no idea, I thought they were all painted steel.

You can have the ones in my shed cheap, I think the problem/expense would be shipping.

Have you looked on your local Craigslist? I know wheels pop up occasionally around here. Keep in mind a bunch of Nissan/Infiniti wheels will fit your car.

Here's the size calculator..
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

275/60/17 is only 0.1% too fast

265/65/17 1.8% too slow

245/65/17 1.6% too fast

Hey evjm,
Thanks a lot for the info.
Just one more question... can I buy just about any 17" steel rims, or they have to be some special brand/kind/size etc???

Thanks,
Chris

I have a 2004 Murano SL and I just bought 17" steel rims and 245/70/17 winter tires from a local tire depot.
Seems like there are no issues however it seems very noisy.
I looked at the rims and there's only about 1/2 inch between rim and the brake caliper so I was wondering if there are any one here who had an issue with the calipers rubbing on the rims and vice versa. I also hear some very tiny whirring sound from it when I make a turn so I thought it might be rubbing...
Anyone had an issue with this steel rims?

Half inch is a lot of distance. Also, the wheel and the caliper normally do not move relative to each other so the sound you are hearing is not them rubbing against each other.

Why go with steel rims at all? I got a set of 18" practiacaly new take-off rims (owner was upgrading) for under $300. You will pay at least $200 for a set of new steelies. In addition, the alloy rims will not rust like steel ones. for me, the improved look is worth $100 and I don't have to worry about bolt pattterns, offsets or lug nut compatibility. My .02

I just recently got a good deal on a set of brand new take off rims as well for my MO, the problem is there isn't very much choice out there for winter tires in the factory size. I'm currently having a hard time finding any winter tires I like at a reasonable price, even tirerack only has one choice available.

I would suggest going with 17" steels also just so that you have some more selection in terms of tires.

Kmalek,

An option to consider is to check out the wrecking yards for a set of factory aluminum 18" rims.

I did a bit of research for you and standard auto wreckers out I'm Scarborough has a few in the $60-70 a piece range. When you look at there inventory off their website, be sure to look at 03-06 model years as the newer you go the price goes up significantly. They have both SL and SE designs.

I also checked out the Canadian Tire website and they do infact offer steel rims (not the black ones but the silver 5 spoke design, kind of like what you would see on a base model Rav4) for around $70 a piece as well.

This seems to be the crux of the matter--hard to find winter tires in the factory size (18) at a reasonable price.
