Yesterday, while perusing different tire web sites, I came across this one based in Ottawa, Canada and I immediately placed my order for 4 235/65/18 Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza before they realized the price was much too low! 235/65*R18 tires: Pneus Online for ALL 235/65*18 car tires#
I only paid CDN $103.87 each plus shipping @ $13.53 each for a total of $117.40 each plus tax!!! If you look at other tires, the average tire price for this size here north of the border is +/- $200. I'll probably get them installed at Walmart as they install any tire at a decent price or a recommended tiresandco installer in my area. One minor problem, they have OWL but I'll have them mounted with the lettering inside and I will cover up the with black paint or something like that! This tire was a long time favorite, known for its soft and quiet ride, great wet traction but poor in snow and it wears out fast (I don't care, I have Blizzaks!) but it has been replaced with the HL Alenza Plus which wears longer but apparently at the expense of traction and noise and perhaps this company bought leftover inventory? Anyway, at that price, it's not a big gamble and I can't wait to remove the GY Eagle LS which are average to say the least. Not sure if they ship to the US.
I think the deal might have gone sour or someone realized they s*****d royally! The tire is no longer listed on their website and my order status says "payment received" but my credit card has not been debited yet and it did not ship either. I'll wait & see...
My credit card was debited yesterday and the tires were on my door step inside my condo building when I came home this afternoon, yahoo! A good neighbour must have accepted delivery on my behalf. Brand new made in USA with the label still glued to the tread...and built about a year ago, no mistake. Will try to get them installed asap!
At only 1500 kms or close to 1,000 miles, I sure don't need an alignment and I did not hit any serious pothole yet. I found a shop that charges $12.50 for mounting and balancing on aluminium wheels, cheaper than Walmart! I'm going tomorrow morning, stay tuned.
Not my day! The shop recommended by the tire vendor is out of business or moved to an unknown location, so I went to the nearest Walmart, little did I know they don't have an auto center anymore (not mentioned on their website); I headed towards another recommended shop but could not find it so headed to another Walmart that still has an auto center operated under Mr Lube. When I came back, I saw the tiny shop I could not find before, duh! Too late.
Anyway, there are no bargains anymore at Walmart for tire mounting and oil changes at least in my neck of the woods; mounting & balancing for 4 tires was $124.99 plus tax because I have aluminium wheels and the size is larger than 17"...any excuse to charge more. I've never paid so much and they'll never see me again!
Too bad Costco only installs tires bought through them at less than half this price. The tires are marginally quieter than the GY Eagle LS and I need to break them in to assess wet & dry traction.
The noise they emit is different than the LS, I would say a lower frequency but that's O.K. as they are much much better. They're not even broken in yet and they already perform way better on dry pavement at freezing temperature then the GY Eagle LS at above freezing temperatures! I'll have a few weeks to try them in the wet before putting my winter tires but sure they'll be better again than the LS. IMO the latter are not worthy of bearing the "Eagle" name, after all what's in a name, right? Like a Hyundai Accent Sport a few years ago, did you say Sport? A spoiler and lower body cladding there you go, you have a Sport car...
I forgot to mention (adding insult to the injury) the guy said if I had low profile tires, there would be another extra charge! They are as bad as the airlines, cell and car rental companies with all the surcharges!!! I had to get this done quickly as with four tires in my car, I did not have enough room to pick up lumber and laminate floor for my girlfriend's house. I'm not gonna lose sleep over this. In over 40 years of owning a car, it's not the first time I get s*****d with car things...just one more time, what the heck?
Interestingly when I bought a new set of shoes for my MO (Kumho tires), they were delivered to my work address and I ended up hauling them around for few days. I too ended up in walmart out of desperation because the smell of the tires was killing me and walmart was the only place that would install them right away. I don't think I paid as much as you to install though...
Walmart Canada was cheap when they ran the auto center themselves; now it's run by Mr Lube which is a no appointment oil change outfit meaning you pay more for saving time! You don't wait in line in your car then drive in the garage like other quick oil change places but they charge just as much... Incidently, Costco Canada only performs synthetic oil change now for about the price most places charge for mineral oil; quite tempting when I'm due for my first oil change!
By law in my province (Quebec), I have another week before putting on Winter tires. I installed my Blizzak's yesterday as we had a few snow falls already but I'm really impressed at how well the Dueler HL Alenza perform on cold pavement, wet or dry that is. They must use a soft compound and that could explain why some owners claim short tread life but I don't really care as safety is a prime concern for me. Traction is way better than the GY Eagle LS, almost like a performance passenger car type all season tire.
They could be a little quieter but I intend to add more soundproofing material to my vehicle when I have some time.
