like a jagoff, i was told the same thing "fuel filler tube replacement" by the dealer. I told them to go ahead and do it. $250 for the part and $500 in labor... My service engine soon light is now off, and the piece where the gas cap screws on is no longer rusty... I wish I would have read this thread before telling them to go ahead. I feel so used!!! thanks for all the great information on this... and i wish there were another nissan dealership near me. (kelly nissan in oak lawn, IL is only 1.5 miles away)..

Mine threw a CEL. Took off the cap, stuffed some paper towel into the filler hole, and sanded the seating area clean. Shot it with some primer then with a couple of coats of polyurethane. Cleaned the cap seal, pulled the paper towel out and have had no problems for a year now. No rust reformation.

Any photos of these rust areas, or their repairs?

Rusted filler tubes are pretty common in Nissan products. My neighbor just took his Maxima to the dealer for a CEL code which indicated "pressure solenoid". I inspected his filler tube and sure enough, rust on the tube as well as the ball check valve on the cap. A good cleaning with 1000 grit paper on the seal and a new cap solved his $1200 dealer fix!!! For $10.00...

In the good old days the tank and the filler neck were tied together with a rubber tube so they could be replaced independently of each other. I am sure they could still do that if they wanted to but they don't. So a $25 part becomes a $1,200 part...

Thanks to the alerts on this site, I checked mine as well. Had some surface rust on the surface of the filler. Stuffed a shop towel in the tube, sanded all the rust off, cleaned it really well to get rid of the residue and then clear coated the filler neck. After letting it dry over night, I recapped the gas tank and all is well.

Default SES light now OFF!!! and MPG improved!

I blocked the gas filler nozzle with a shop rag. sanded the rust away with steel wool. painted the nozzle insert with gas resistant engine block paint. cleaned the gas cap. And after a couple of trips light is off!!! I did order a new gas cap for the heck of it but did not get it yet.

In addition my gas millage improved drastically. I have a typical commute and always averaged about 20mpg. after the light went on it dropped to 17mpg. After the repair it is up to 24 mpg. Same commute.

I would recommend this maintenance item to all even if you (MIL) service engine soon light is not on yet.

I got picks to be uploaded.
