Good evening, Mr. Z, your car is ready. We replaced the intake duct as per the recall, but unfortunately your MAF sensor was out of spec so we had to replace it. We also had to perform an Idle Relearn procedure, and your brakes needed new pads. The total comes to $1,699. What? You thought this was a no-cost recall? Well we found the bad MAF sensor and replaced it. What? You say the MAF was working just fine when you came in yesterday? Well, we tested the MAF sensor after it hit the floor and it definitely was out of spec. What? You want to know why we had to remove it in the first place? We did not want it to get damaged while doing the recall. What? You want to know why we had to perform an Idle Relearn procedure? Well, our mechanic had just removed your battery to work on installing the new MAF sensor when he had to go on his lunch break. When he came back 90 minutes later your car did not idle properly. What? You just replaced the brake pads yourself 10,000 miles ago? Well they obviously were not OEM so they wore unevenly and need to be replaced by us. What? You have wheel locks and the key is in your possession and you want to know how we removed the wheels to check the brakes? Well we have a universal key, that's how. Would you like to see what else we found during our free 100-point inspection? Mr. Z.? Mr. Z! please put down that hammer...
You know how something SHOULD be funny, but it's just not because it's too close to the truth that it makes you sad?

What problems have people reported? I know my intake sounds a bit different afterwards, and it may just be in my head, but it seems the throttle response changed too.

Nissan just had to be geniuses and use wire clamps instead of using steel band clamps like everybody else. More clamping surface area = less chance of it being pulled apart.

Just scroll through the original `air intake recall' thread (in the recall section of this forum) started 12/09. You'll see.

Those posts sure made me gun shy when I'm having NO intake problems.

Well I had not taken my car in for the recall and I ended up one day thinking I had some serious issue when it started to show the symptoms. I took it into the dealer to get the SES light turn off and they fixed it for me. They also got me for the front struts $900 and the catalytic converter. The SES light was on because the converter was bad and needed replaced. I was within 4 miles of going over the warranty for that. I got lucky there. I have never been to the dealer to get something from a recall fixed with out them finding something else that is wrong with it.

$900 is pretty steep for just 2 struts, but probably typical cost at a dealer. More importantly, how could you possibly need struts if you were still under warranty? That's crazy (IMHO)! Based on this and your dealer always finding other problems, I say you need to find a new dealer.

Good (honest) ones DO exist. Mine did the first 2 recalls on our Mo - the alternator and fuel tank protector/rear seat belt sleeves - and found zero other `problems.' In 5 1/2 years with my 04 SE I've spent a total of $195 at my dealer, and that was for routine maintenance (antifreeze and the accessory belts).

In 15 1/2 years, my Maxima has been to this same dealer several times, and never has any work been done (or recommended) other than what the car was brought in for.

I am the third owner of my Murano and told me that the original warranty was up, but there was a factory extended warranty on the cats. I'm still trying to find a good dealer for our Murano, but they all seem to be owned by the same people around here. I went in for an oil change earlier this week and they told me my motor mounts were shot and needed to be replaced. I'm shopping those around though.

That's possible, but I sure wouldn't pop for mounts without getting an opinion from an independent shop. That's exactly the kind of piece that they migght try to sell you because many people don't know what they are.

I remember when motor mounts were simple pieces of rubber and metal bonded together, and they usually lasted the life of the car......

What year is this car, and how many miles are on it?

It is a 2004 and I just rolled over 95,000 this afternoon. I bought it for my wife almost two years ago with 76,000 miles on it. We both enjoy driving it. She says it feel like an electric go cart , we are beginning to realize though that these modern new age parts can become quite expensive fast.

Granted I am 17K miles from you, but my 04 has yet to need a single part - other than wear items (tires, battery, brake pads, filters, antifreeze, accessory belts, wipers, and license plate bulbs).

3 owners in 6 years sounds strange to me, but I always buy cars for the long haul. I've had my other one (95 Maxima) for 15 1/2 years and 212K miles with minimal expenses. Eventually, I know some parts will be inevitable for the Mo, however.
