Default Nissan recalls 130,000 vehicles - 70,000 Muranos

Haven't heard anything around here that can be traced to this.
But if you have one of the affected MOs, get it in and have it fixed.

Homer

TOKYO — Nissan Motor Co. has begun recalling over 130,000 vehicles globally — including 80,000 in North America — because of an ignition key defect, a company official said Thursday.

Nissan is recalling 70,000 Murano SUVs and about 10,000 Maxima sedans in North America, spokeswoman Madoka Soma said.

In Japan, the company is recalling over 50,962 SUVs — X-Trail and Murano — produced between August 2004 and July 2006,

The recalls involve only the cars with "intelligent keys."

The lock device of the ignition key is not appropriately attached in some cars and it does not lock when the driver turns the engine off, according to Soma.

There have been no reports of injuries, according to a statement by the Transport Ministry.

Default Intelligent Key Recall

I just got off the phone with Nissan USA. They just found out about the smart key recall. They told me that the dealer would not have a TSB to work with, so I guess we have to wait for the official recall notices. I also called dealer and they did not have any info either.

For me first it was the '03 alternator debacle. Now I have an '05 with this "smart key". its been a very frustrating car to say the least.

sort of confusing as to exactly what the problem is, does it mean there is only a problem if key is insterted?

Some of the rods connecting the ignition part with parts that start the engine are too long, so the cars sometimes don't start properly, Nissan said. Occasionally, the engines start even when the ignition is turned off and the driver moves the steering wheel, it said.

The recalls involve only models using Nissan's "intelligent keys" with integrated circuit chips inside, which allows drivers to open their car doors with their keys still inside their pockets by just pressing on the handle. Drivers don't need to insert the intelligent key to get the car to start, and can keep the key anywhere nearby.

The defect involved in Thursday's recall is not related to the integrated circuit chip features but to the regular ignition part of the key.

Thanx for the alert Homer!

My MO is not intelligent (no Intelligent Key) nor even bright (no HIDs), but I love her anyway.

Two recalls.... you should look at other manufactures they have 'em too.... Toyota, Honda etc. This is business as usually for auto manufactures.

I'm just happy that they issue recalls.

Not that I use the key much-

Sounds like a relatively trivial issue. As long as I cannot be bodily injured (like when the fuel tank gets ignited) and as long as the car does not stop function (like with a faulty alternator), I don't care too much.

Although I have to do my first oil change next week, I'll wait for the dealership to contact me to get this fixed, because (from previous posts) it looks like the dealerships themselves do not know exactly what needs to be done...not that they know a lot to begin with

Early reports are that none of the U.S. Murano's are affected. Only some 10,000 Maximas that use the Intelligent Key system. The only Murano's affected are those sold in Asian (primarily Japan). Of course, this could change, but so far, neither Nissan nor NHTSA feel affected Murano's are in the United States.

Thumbs up recalls

Thanks to all you for your information! My 06' Murano has intelligence and I love my car so I am concerned about this problem. I do hope it turns out to affect only the cars sold in Japan.
