Good investigation work there.

I think part of the reason for your findings is that currently Nissan makes 2 different size OEM filters that have identical bases and gaskets, just the overall length of the filter is different like you mentioned about 1/3 longer.

For example the Nissan OEM filter for the VQ35DE is 15208-65F00 (or 65F0C) which is a short style filter.
The other filter is the 15208-9E000 which is identical just longer. This filter is used on the trucks, 2.5L Altimas and older VQ30DE engines with no oil coolers.
Both these filters work just fine and interchange between each other so that may be the reason why aftermarket companies have 2 different options.

i'm planning on putting a wix 51324 on my wife's mo
Height: 4.354
Outer Diameter: 3.663
that was the biggest filter i could find that had a m20x1.5 threads on it
the base gasket is a little bigger but it will work..
i was going to put it on my 99 fronter (v6) but it would't fir because of the alternator bracket was in the way.. but i took about 1/4" off the bracket and put a Baldwin B161-s on it..

For the folks who like the Purolator Pure One filter, here's another alternative:

Recommended: Purolator PL14612 (2.93 height)
Alternative: Purolator PL14610 (3.52 height)

I just needed another filter, did a search and came up with my post at the bottom of the previous page. Went to Advance Auto's website, ordered there with promo code P20 (good through the end of Jan for online orders) and got 20% off the filter.
