Default Is upgrading the base stereo with amp and speakers worth it?

Thinking of upgrading my 2004 base stereo (non-Bose) with a 4 channel amp, speakers, and maybe a sub. Thing is, the audio shops want about $1000 for this upgrade which seems steep. Not something I want to tackle myself.

Has anyone done this? Is it worth it? The stock stereo is so sad.

I took the easy route and just replaced the six speakers for $240.

The improvement in sound clarity was well worth the time, effort and money.

The highs and mid are now crisp and clean. The bass is tighter but the low-bass is obviously lacking, however, I am driving a car and not sitting in my living room so I am fine with the results.

That is steep, I paid $180 for install of 2 amps, 4 channel and 1 channel into the stock non-bose in my 06 Murano. That was just the installation though, I bought wires and everything else seperate.

Of course Best Buy is not the greatest quality installers, but I've been happy.

I found the stock stereo to be acceptable - wish it had a midrange EQ adjustment.

I replaced the door speakers in my S model and sound is improved - and PLENTY loud enough.

Here's what I did...

How to replace speakers in 07 Murano w/base audio system
