Exclamation Leaky cv boot problem

Notice my passenger front cv boot started leaking. And of course, before looking at the forms I went to autozone and picked up a cv boot kit. Bought the large size, but it was not big enough, found this out after cutting the old boot off.
I read they have a kit from the nissan dealership. But im curious if the "kit" is the same type where one half is open, so I do not need to pull thhe axle out.
Its 11pm so the dealership is closed.
Help, advise, input please.

2004 FWD Mo.

I dont think there is a zipper type axle boot kit anywhere. If its the outer boot(close to the tire) that is torn, maybe you can get away replacing it without pulling out the axle---but it will be very difficult and awkward. You might damage the axle seal also while doing the repair this way. To do it properly, you have to pull out the entire axle and clean the cv joint--remove old grease--check if the cv joint is still in good condition(no clicking or grinding) Slide in the new boot repack the grease and clamp it tight. Check out youtube for how tos on this repair. Many videos that can help you.

Some people including me prefer just replacing the entire axle with an aftermarket one or a rebuilt one for easier repair. Will cost you a little bit more but easier. I think you can get one for 100. Aslo, check the axle seal..its recommended to replace the seal whenever you pull out the axle.

Bub-

I did a quick search for "split CV boots" but did not find any applicable to the MO.

If the grease is leaking out then chances are pretty darn good that dirt and water are getting in. I suggest replacing the axle.

This is a relatively common repair and can be handled by any reputable garage. There is definitely no need to take this to a Nissan dealer.

Thanks for the advice, I have been noticing the clicking issues, so sounds like replacing the axle w/seal is the best corse

I suggest checking out the major auto chains. In my region Advance Auto Parts is one of the larger chains and they have a new axle shaft for the MO listed at $69.99.

Ended up changing it out, replaced the gasket, no leaks. But I did notice my bushing on the lower control arm is just about blown out as well. So that'll be the next project
Is simple green the easiest/cheapest way to get all that grease/grim off?
