My Mo is at approx. 124K miles and has recently started to make a whining noise. My first thought was the CVT or TC, but the noiuse increases when I rev the engine and is still there when in neutral. It almost sounds like I have a turbo charger under the hood.
My first guess (or hope) is that it is a pulley bearing (i.e., alternator, tensioner, etc.). Anyone have any other thoughts or experience on this noise. I couldn't find a match of my problem with a forum search. All in all, the Mo is running like a champ minus the noise. -biggun

You can temporarily eliminate pulley or drive belt noise by spraying water on them. Try that and hopefully it will be just a pulley or a belt.

Z - I do not think that it is a belt. Mine were replaced about a year ago or so. Plus, it does not sound like a belt. Best way to describe it is the noise a power steering pump would make in older cars when you would turn the wheel - if that make sense. I was leaning towards pulley bearings as a result - thinkning possibly the steering pump.
Nite - I'm not sure about the TC since the sound is still present in neutral.

If you suspect the pulley bearing, look closely to the idler pulley bearing. I had a very bad experience with it when I had a dealer change my belt about 4 years back. Idiots over tighten the belt and messed up the idler pulley bearing. A month after the belt change I started to have bearing noise at idle and slow speed. They fix that under warranty but less than a year later the idler pulley bracket just split into 2. I think it was due to the initial over tightening of the belt that caused it. They got me on that one though. I hated them for it. Anyways, the noise was more noticeable on stop/idle and low speed. Can't remember if the noise increase in speed.

I had the same issue. I put in some Power Steering Fluid, and it solved the problem. I think I have a small leak, but I am not sweating it at this point.

Well, after approx. 3 weeks, I just got the battery/brake light indication, which is most likely the alternator. I believe that was the sound I was hearing. My original alternator was replaced under the orginal recall back in 2005/6ish. So I guess a 6 year old alternator is not out of the question. Everything is runing fine, with no limp mode yet.
I just hope it does not entail the wire connection issue that others have experienced. Planning to call the dealer on Monday for an appointment. -biggun
