Default This is driving me crazy...

Hi guys,

Just wondering if any of you know how to remove the dealer price marks on the windscreen.
When I bought my MO, the dealer have wrote price and description on the windscreen with some kind of white marker.
They have removed the words but every morning (or when you wipe the windscreen), it fogs and shows exactly what wording was on there.
Is there any way to remove this permanently?
I have tried everything I can think of, petrol, window cleaners, mineral terp. etc.

Anyone know? Please please help!
Thanks

Try goo gone or acetone--nail polish remover.

Rubbing alcohol is usually really good at getting residue off.

I had a friend with a used vehicle he purchased with the same issue. No chemicals would remove the problem. Chemicals just couldn't do the job. Anyway, I referred my friend to a local business guy that removes scratches / blemishes from motor vehicle windows and the local guy buffed the whole side of the windshield with abrasives which negated the problem in the affected area of the windshield. Cost $30.00 cash. You would never know the windshield had be worked on.

Find some Bon Ami at the store - get some newspaper - apply and rub with newspaper.

Go back to the dealer, find out exactly what he used to write on the windshield, go to the manufacturer's website and find what they recommend to remove the residue.

If it turns out the residue is not removable then I would work with the dealership to have the glass replaced.

Indeed, the selling dealer should foot the repair bill. About the issue the OP is having. It is a weird type of issue that most here have never had to deal with or I'm quite sure have ever experienced. The only time the offending letters shows up is when the windshield gets foggy as when temps change. If you looked at the windshield any other you see no markings. It's alike the original lettering marker or the stuff they removed the lettering with has changed the composition of the out layer of the windshield. Don;t know how to explain this but my guess is only way to repair is the buffing with abrasives or for the windshield to be replaced.

I'd be willing to bet it was white shoe polish that they used to write on the windshield. That's pretty much what every dealership uses.

If you've tried some basic cleaning and it still shows up I'd just go back and complain to the dealership. It's almost certainly residue (shoe polish doesn't alter the glass or anything) and they'll simply bust out the orbital buffer and some super fine compound and in 5 minutes it will be gone.

I agree. It is white shoe polish, and anything that removes wax will remove the residue. Goo gone or acetone will remove it.

See the note about Bon Ami in my earlier post. It's a very mild abrasive which is safe for glass.

All you need is elbow grease, Bon Ami and newspaper.

If you have full glass coverage? A hammer and your insurance companies phone number is all you need. lol. That's how I fixed the rear defroster on our 01 Beetle!
