I hear ya, its almost like Nissan made it easier to pull an engine out of the newer models than the older lol.
And yeah sorry for the the hijack but thats insane, $3300 for customer pay timing chains... only thing i can think of is they're throwing in the 2 VTC sprockets? I know those things are about $500 each but i've rarely replaced those. $82/hr is insane too! Shoot we're like $160ish around here and $3300 is still high imo. BTW where are you located? |

The dealer said this was a 3 day job, 7 hours per day. They did not mention exactly what parts needed to be replaced except to say the timing chain tensioner needed replacing. They originally quoted $3800 but brought it down to $3300 when I said I was not interested. At $3300, it sounded a bit high to me and, as originally stated, that's not the kind of cash I want to spend on a car this old. At $1500-$1800 I might have done it, but at this point I think the car has limited time with me.
As far as location, I'm in Southern Illinois. There just aren't too many mechanics in my area I feel know enough about the Murano to be able to do a competent job of diagnosing or fixing the problem. It appears the unanimous opinion is to keep this issue out of the conversation when trading it in. Thanks for your thoughts and I agree. Even I disclose, there is no guarantee the information will be passed along. |

I hear ya. I just spent $2100 on a 2001 Beetle for timing belt, tensioner, water pump, temp sensor, thermostat, rear shocks and drive shaft seal. But she runs like new, gets 32 MPG and only has 64k miles on it.

Why not travel to central Illinois and see KtG? He sounds like the expert in your area. I have to travel a bit to get to turbizzy in my area but that is exactly what I will be doing once it is time to do so.

Good suggestion. If I decide to keep the car, I'll look him up. Seems like he is far more reasonable than the local dealership and it would be nice to work with another forum member. The car has other issues that need to be addressed and it seems like every time I get one problem fixed, two more pop up. Anyway, I'm currenlty looking at replacement wheels. It's a tough call but I'll give an update once a decision is made.

Update . . . I traded in the MO (2003 SL FWD, no optional equipment, 111k miles). Dealer offered $6k. I decided to disclose the tensioner issue. Price only went down to $5,500. I can't complain about that.
Anyway, thanks to all posters and good luck with your MO's. |
