how empty do you go?

In hot summer months I top off the tank when it gets below 1/2 to limit empty space and vaporization of gas in the tank. Otherwise between 1/8 to 1/4. On couple of occasions I did stretch it out a bit when I needed almost 21 gallons to be whole!

I generally fill up when the Mo tells me to. But I think I might start just topping it off every Sunday.

I run it down pretty close to empty every time. I start to get nervous when I go 20 miles past ***, but I've run it as far as 45 miles past it. I've never run out of gas, and I've never had a problem during our wonderful Wisconsin winters and humid summers!

Never let it get below 1/4 tank. Call it personal paranoia.

I went 25 more miles after *** DTE, then filled up. It clicked off at 17.0 gallons and I thought no way that it's full and filled up to 18.5 clicking on, off, on, off...

My tank never seems to want to fill up all the way. Sometimes by 2-3 gallons at some stations.

How far away are gas stations from where you usually are, Hal?

Now after driving 20+ miles after the light went off and I could still only get 18.5 gallons in... I know when the light goes off, I have at least 75 miles left at normal driving pace.

I can definitely not worry from now on if the gas light comes on.

How many gallons does an 06 S hold? I can not remember ever having to put more than 15 gallons in, and I have run close to having maybe 50 miles left at times. But my gauge always shows full after filling (doesn't stay that way long). I'm curious when I see how many gallons some other are getting in.

I often run to Zero miles indicated, but I'm aware that running the tank DRY is a bad idea. Why?

Because today's fuel pumps are located at the bottom of the fuel tank and they are cooled by the liquid (gas) around them. Running the tank completely dry lets the fuel pump run hotter than designed and may lead to premature pump failure.

However, this does NOT require running 1/4 tank or more....

Ha! that's a good measure of distance...time! I never go below 60 miles to empty. I don't want to strain the pump, but that is just a theory. That being, fuel junk is what is left over in the tank, and running the tank all the way down causes the pump to pick up the junk, causing fuel pump failure. Ideas? Thoughts? Makes sense to me.
