Default Roof Mounted Antenna

My '09 antenna had a collision with a erratic operating garage door and the protruding part was broken off. Dealer quoted over $300 to replace. Headliner would have to be removed, etc. I elected to prospone the job. Since that time, I have taken a road trip and find no apparent reception problem with the broken antenna, on AM, FM or XM. Any comments?

The antenna part that sticks up is screwed into the base. Did you damage the threaded base? It's a common thread size for satellite antennas. If your base is not damaged, maybe an after-market one would be easier on the pocket book. Take care!

Red, could you give more details on this? I can't find anything online, and local car audio stores are clueless. (I also sent you a PM)

Thanks,
Hokey

I replaced my roof antenna with one called "Shark". Very easy to put on and I think it looks much nicer. Check it out at www.visualgarage.com/home.html
They will paint them to match your car.

Gordo,
Thanks for posting the pics. The "Shark" definitely looks better than the OEM antenna stub.

I too have the LE in Merlot. Curious as to the AM/FM and XM reception. Have you noticed any difference?

I have not noticed any change at all in the reception since I added the "Shark" antenna. I also put one on my wife's Infiniti EX35 and that also did not change the reception at all. Very easy to install also.

As an alternative to the shark fin, has anyone tried the 3 inch carbon fiber antenna? You can see one here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...0105&viewitem=

What's most important about these antennas is not the exterior, but what they have inside to make it an effective antenna. Hard to get that info without BTDT reports!

I drove around the Seattle area for a week with the antenna off, and there was absolutly no difference from when it was on. It cut out in the same places on or off. So I could not imaging that stub would make it any worse.

The reason I was looking into one of these options, was for clearance with my roof top cargo box. I was able to adjust the box forward just enough so that it does not bend down the antenna.

Same here... and I was worried about getting stuff in the antenna hole, so thought this 3 inch stubby was cheap enough to give it a try. I don't use the sat radio, only navigation, so I'll give a report after using it.
