listening to Radio while engine is OFF drains the battery??

Hey Guys,

I have a question regarding battery life with the Radio on (engine off).

we are planning to go to drive-in theater this weekend. There will be 2 movies screened one after the other and it takes about 5 hrs to complete both. So, just wanted to check with you if I leave the radio on while turning off the engine drains the battery ?? If so, I wouldn't want to do that, are there any good alternatives?

Thanks for your help!!!

Go have fun. If your battery dies because of Radio being on for 5 hours then it needed replacement anyways!

If your there for 5 hours just start your car for five mins every hour to make sure and give it a little charge. But yes if the electronics are ON and the car isn't, it will drain the battery.

So go by Radio Shack and pick up a portable radio. They start at around $15 for models with speakers.
But Zeb is right. YOur battery should run the radio at modest volume for5 hours, no sweat.

I disagree with this. I don't think that 5 minutes of idling at low RPMs will counter the additional drain on the battery when starting the car and everything else.

5 hours of radio use should be easy for a fully charged normal battery, assuming that you're not having all the interior lights on or the climate control system.

I'll just find the best hotel with a big screen... check in.... then get a pay-per-view movie. NO battery drain worries.

I watched the Karate Kid at the drive in last weekend with the radio on and had no problems starting it back up. It wasnt 5 hours long, but dare I ask what movies are planning to watch?!

+1

Listened to the radio in my Mo once for 2 hours and could not restart the car. This was the original baytery which was coming up on being 5 years old. Battery was toast. Replaced the battery and no issues watching DVDs or listening to the radio for extended periods.

A healthy battery can run the radio for hours on end without a problem. Don't worry about it - just enjoy the movie.

I would not recommend starting the car and running it for 5 minutes. That's hardly enough time to recharge a battery, and the starting likely drains it even more.

Of course it drains energy from the battery...running anything when the engine is off creates a drain on the battery. That's one thing the battery is intended for.

Personally, I'd just fire it up and idle for 10-15 minutes at the end of the first movie. That's long enough for a decent re-charge. Five minutes isn't a long enough run period that I'd be confident of adding significantly more energy than it took to start the vehicle.

I would have to agree with Eric and Pilgrim too. Just make sure that the key is in no. 1 position and that the fan and lights are off.

Have fun; it's been a while since I've been to a drive-in. Will have to put it on my list of things to take the kids to

If you want to take your kids to a drive in movie, doit.
Later you will be amazed at the things you were "gonna do" with your kids, and now they are up and outa the nest........

The other thing is there are not a lot of drive ins left.
432 is the number I hear.
When I was a kid there were way over 3000......and a lot less people........

Here is a search I ran on Drive-ins.com - Welcome to Drive-ins.com
