Default LED License Plate Bulb

I just finished installing new white (5000K color) LEDs for my license plate lights. I used to have these on my 2010 Maxima and by the looks of it they don't disappoint on the Murano either.

Final product:

FYI: Accessing the rear bulbs is much easier than I thought it would be.

Sorry for the delay answering but I've been out of town.

Details for the LEDS:
1) Bought at VLEDS.com for $7.99 (pair) but they are currently out of stock.
2) The bulb replacement size needed is 194
3) This is exactly what I bought -> "WHITE 5K SMT HIGH POWER LED LIGHT BULBS 194 168 158 2821"
4) I tried both the 5K and the 6K color. From experience I would NOT recommend 6K color unless you want a strong blue hue look to it.

Regarding the installation, yes you have the remove the inner liner of the gate in order to get to the bulbs.

Before anything you will need a flat blade screwdriver to detach completely 1) the inner trunk closing handle 2) power gate button assembly (if equipped) 3) the inside lights (x2) mounted in the gate itself. All of these come off easy.

From there are I believe 4/5 plugs that you can remove just by applying pressure with your finger nail (press them in and they will pop out). By doing them you have released the tight pressure fit of the liner. Next step is to insert a flat blade screwdriver from one side to the other and place your fingers in the gab and pull away (BE GENTLE!!!!!!) to release other pressure plugs placed throughout the liner. Please note that at the very end of each side (right by the gas shock) there are two pressure connectors that are much more tight / difficult to break lose. Just take your time and shimmy it to release the liner since from what I noticed these can be easily broken off. The whole unit should drop and you will get access to the bulbs, etc. Please be sure to pay attention when you have the liner off where the pressure connectors are located since you're going to need it for the reinstall.

To put it all back together I would start off by lining the gate locking mechanism and then next with the tighest connectors by the shocks to line everything out. From there just gently tap each area where the pressure plugs are placed. Don't forget to feed the power gate and light switch cords through their respective openings before you seal the liner back into place.

I will try to grab a few photos of where I recall the plugs are placed throughout the liner.

Why?
I would think excessive white light at the rear of a vehicle would be illegal in some states....

I believe you're right. Altering the license plate lighting with LED's is probably as illegal as putting those colored, fluorescent license plate frames on here in MA. I KNOW those are illegal in MA (and likely other states as well).

The actual question is why not?

The light is no more white / intense than factory Lexus license plate bulbs. Next time you see a later year model Lexus on the road, notice their license plate bulbs as they are LED sourced.

Actually changing these bulbs to LEDs made it easier to see right behind the car via the camera. They are NOT an intrusive color (they are white!!), flashing nor glaring therefor I don't think comparing them to "colored, fluorescent license plate frames" depicts an "oranges to oranges" approach.

I got the exact same bulb from V leds. Do check if the end of the LED bulb is touching the plastic enclosure. The bulb can get really hot and burn the plastic housing.

I had to return the bulb and got another for $19 which is 26 mm in length.

Hope this helps.

Also anyone tried to change the map lights in 2009 Murano and replaced it with LEDs? If so, please add instruction how to remove the bulb, as I couldn't get it out.

Since when do Light Emitting Diodes produce noticable heat? And enough to melt plastic?...they ARE plastic..lol.

For me the bulb was touching the plastic housing. After a drive of 2+ hrs, touched the plastic housing and found it very hot.

I didn't want to take a chance and went with a smaller bulb size instead.

Just wanted to let the readers know.
