Default '09 steering tilt motor dead

My tilt motor died yesterday while getting in - I hear grinding noises and it doesn't move - however telescoping does...

I'm looking to find instructions to replace it on my own, as It has 51k+ miles, and over the 3 year - basically warranty expired & I didn't opt for the extended. I'm not about to spend $$$ at the dealer on a problem that should be a recall! Especially if it can be replaced at home...

I know this a known problem with the 09 LE-

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is a service bulletin on it. Maybe the dealer will take care of it even though it is out of warranty.

The steering column power adjustment (tilt or telescope) does not work or makes abnormal noise when operating the switch

Mine went out at around 49K miles...and this is a pretty common occurrence...but Nissan wouldnt' take care of it...however a VERY PR oriented service manager wrote it off to "Customer Goodwill" and the dealership ate about $400 in parts and labor. If you're mechanically inclined, you may be able to replace the little gear driven motor youself...I believe I saw a DIY on it in here somewhere. I have the extended Nissan Premium warranty to 100K, and this little part was NOT included in the warranty....so it must occur frequently enough that it was justification for Nissan to exclude it. All the other little parts in the steering column were covered....just not this little gear driven motor.

Default Another failure

Mine went last week after 3 years and 50k miles. Just had it replaced today. It was covered under my Gold Preferred 7 year/100k service plan.

This is what's so frustrating...I have the same plan...when I bought the car I asked them to set me up with the best plan Nissan offered for a car that had run out of the original bumper to bumper warranty...so they sold me this plan...same as yours....however when I went to the dealership, they showed me where it specifically WAS NOT covered, yet you say that you went in and they covered it. I don't think that the dealerships read these warrantys, or that the service departments may approach this failure in different ways. The dealership did take care of mine...but not under the Nissan extended warranty...are you sure they did it under the warranty or did they write it off to "Goodwill" like they did mine? I guess the point is moot because I really have no complaint...it was fixed and I didn'thave to pay for it...neither did you...we're both happy.

I got a spreadsheet like brochure when I bought the plan (good deal from Nissan of Keene, NH) that lists what is covered under each plan available. I checked after seeing your post and the steering tilt/telescope motors are specifically covered under my plan.

I think there are different plans for vehicles bought used and out of warranty than the ones bought on cars still in warranty. Those plans do not have the motor checked on the spreadsheet, so that may be why mine was covered. When the service adviser printed out the repair order, it showed the VIN was under the Gold Preferred Plan through 100k/July,15. He glanced at it and said it was covered.

The actual plan document only lists what is NOT covered, and that is only a few typical wear and tear items and the air bag sensors. It even covers belts and hoses.

You could try calling Nissan Consumer affairs to see if they will cover under the "good faith" thing they do, and since it is a known issue (Service Bullitin).

I recommend going to Knowledgebase - Service Bulletins - Nissanhelp.com Forums and sign up for free. You can download 2 Service Bulletins for free each day. - I love the word FREE!

My tilt motor died Tuesday. Took it to the dealer and they ordered me a new motor. It was covered under my Gold Ext. Warranty plan minus a $50.00 deductible.

How much are these extended warranty plans cost on average anyways?

I don't remember. I bought my Murano on the Vehicle Purchase Program since my bro-in-law works for Nissan, so I got the Extended Warranty cheap too.

Thats cool. I was just reviewing my expense on my 04 for the past 8 years---850 for repairs. If its close to 1500 then I am still ok. Thought of getting one years back but opted out.
