Hello all, just purchased a nice 2011 Murano SV trim for my wife. The dealer that sold it to us only had one Key Fob (and the key inside it is "cut.")

I ordered a new Fob w/blank key from eBay. Before it arrives, I was hoping to find out if the Fobs can be programmed myself, or if I need to go to a dealer and have them do it? I have found some instructions for programming the fobs, but it looks like they are for older model years.

Also, if I have to get it done at a dealer, does anyone know what I can expect to pay for this service (the programming and/or the key cutting)?

Thanks in advance, my wife loves the vehicle so far!

I lost my primary fob...the one that opens the back tailgate...it has four buttons on it. I had them re program it and had to buy another one also....it cost me about $200 to buy the blank, have the key cut, and do the electronic programming. You may be able to negotiate a bit on the programming because they just plug into a computer program from another company. You call the other company and "buy" the programming thru an escrow fee....then they issue you an identification number. You take that number to Nissan and they punch into the company's database, get the program, and install it in the key fob. The price from the company that has the program is fixed, but the fee Nissan charges to actually istall it in the fob may be subject to a little negotiation. They gave me $20 off to do the install, so I ended up paying $180.

I'm lost as to why you wouldnt get 2 fobs with a new car? Why would you pay for anything?

Woah, woah woah... Timeout!

I bought the vehicle used from a dealer that is not related to Nissan (or any other manufacturer for that matter).

As far as the 2nd fob goes, they never got a 2nd one when they bought it at auction. I am getting reimbursed for everything, but I was hoping for a quicker and easier turnaround on everything, hence my question about the programming.

The way this is going to work is that I purchase the fob, take it to a dealer (I assume, from chuck jones' post) and have them program the fob and cut the key, then go back to the dealer with my receipts and they will give me a check. So the fewer times I have to pay for anything, the better it is for me.

Looks like I am going to have to get it programmed at a Nissan dealership.

Oh ok. That makes more sense. But a USED 2011 Murano found at a non Nissan dealer? I'd want to know a lot more about why they had such a new car.
Don't buy the FOB from the dealer. Ebay or most online Nissan parts places will be cheaper. Programming isn't too bad and you don't need a key on the 11s.

I have had an extra fob (purchased from ebay) programmed for each of my Nissans, a '09 Maxima and a '11 Murano, at my local dealer. They charged $50 for the programming and cutting the key. The extra fob is my emergency fob. I removed the battery and hid it inside the vehicle and hid a key on the outside. The outside key is a cheapo from a hardware store that opens the door just fine. If I lose my fob while I am away from home all I have to do is retrieve the hidden key, open the door, get the fob and insert it in the slot and away I go.

Yes, you would want to get the key cut. Your local locksmith can cut the key without problem. Cost $2.00+-.

Yes, just like most other car's there is a place for the key to be inserted on your '11 Murano. Look at your door. IF your key fob battery ever becomes depleted and subsequently your fob will not unlock your door you will be glad you have a key to gain access to the vehicle with. Yes, probably few and far between the times you will use the key but when you need it you will be glad you have it.

Take the battery powered fob out of the picture and the key can still be used to lock and unlock doors. Can be used to open and close windows.... but with the fob out of the picture you won't be able to drive the vehicle.

-Take time to read your vehicle manual-

I can't remember the last year Nissan had a key hole on anything other than the drivers door. Most cars got rid of that a while ago.

If you open the glove box, there's a spot for the owners manual on the upper part.
