Bye bye battery maintenance - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well, I bit the bullet and bought an Optima Red Top. My OEM battery was 4 1/2 years old, never any trouble, added water when needed, but 4 1/2 years old...

Uesd a size 35, which is the only one which has the correct terminal orientation without messing with the leads. It is not quite as tall, requiring some washers on the hold down bolts.

I WAS noticing when starting, lights would dim. Not any more!

And be able to add wter, I would check it and do it. Lack of water #1 reason for battery failure and of course heat.

Optima doesn't use water. It is a spiral plate gel filled battery and is TOTALLY sealed. No caps at all! Totally different technology....

Been using them for years(since 1986) and they are truly "maintenance free". No acid/water to eat into things. No plates to get damaged from rough riding. They can even be mounted upside down:1: !

In my old Phaeton they had two batteries one for cranking and one for the rest of the stuff. The rest of the stuff was called A Glass Matt battery, Is that what you are talking about. OR still something different? Wow I am really asleep at the switch, I sure would like to not have to worry about loosing the water portion of the electrolite downhere on the 100+ day that were are over 105F

Are there no gasses to vent, How does it handle internal pressure changes with temp. MAybe I better go to the Mfgs web and read and learn.  :1:
ekaxel
Forgot to mention-no vents either!

That's Dumb Ass Questions for people like me. Wow neato stuff. Well Next time I need a battery I will know why I am buying one.

I won't take a chance anymore and haven't since I bought my Max wagon years ago. The battery was warranted for one year and lasted 13 months! The mechanic at the garage told me him and his father both had bought Maxs the year before mine and theirs both did the same thing. Ever since I have kept the factory battery one year and driven to Sears and gotten the biggest Diehard they could put in. Zero maintenance and the slightest problem and they take them back for a few years and then pro rated. All of my cars have Diehards in them.

I just did this as well, replaced my OEM with an Optima Red Top.

My OEM was actually working fine, and I never had to add water. Checked it every oil change, never needed more.

On one hand, I hate replacing something that works perfectly fine, but on the other hand hearing all the problems people here have had with their OEM battery between 30-40k miles, and me being over 40k, I wanted to AVOID having problems.

Optima Red Top is PRICEY. But after doing a fair amount of research, this does seem to be one of the best batteries out there, and their warranty is very good. So, is it worth it to pay twice the price for twice the [full replacement] warranty? I decided it was, but it was kind of a "what the hell" decision more than anything.

Little more confident to get through the winter now, though.

...on a cold day when they are backed up with calls and telling you it ios going to be hours. Make sure to tell the operator to tell the driver that if the truck arrives in 20 minutes or less the driver gets a $20 tip!!! He will be there as fast as he can!

Thought my battery was OK, but noticed the dash lights would dim when starting, and was getting intermittent "SLIP" and "AWD" lights illuminated (usually went away after restarting the car.)

Then I took my wife out to meet some friends, and I stayed in the car with my son for an hour, and the MO wouldn't start. Yup - battery was going bad.

I replaced it with a Sears DieHard (Group 35). No issues since, no "SLIP" and "AWD" lights, car starts right up and I could swear I have better performance and better fuel mileage. Downside is that the old battery was dripping acid and my battery tray and hold-downs had the paint/finish etched by the battery acid. Even some of the underhood plastic bits and metal bits had corrosion from the battery acid spitting-up everywhere.

If you have a 2003 or 2004 MO and are on the original battery, I'd say it's probably time to have the battery checked and changed if required. Don't let battery acid drip down and eat away the paint on your battery tray or splatter in the engine compartment.

... you would have been sitting much sooner!!!! As soon as you notice any electrical slow down go for a battery!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2003, battery is still going strong... I will probably keep it for another 3-4 years in which I'll replace it with another Nissan battery.

Being that you live in the north and have winters to go through I wouldn't count on that type of longevity!!! Carry a cell phone as you WILL find it useful!!! Do you carry a phone book with you?

There's no way I'd risk keeping a battery around that long - at least with the winters we have to deal with. It's worth the money for peace-of-mind.

I've had a battery die (in our own driveway) on a -30 day, and it was not fun!!!
Nuf.Evah
of a penny he posts a bad experience of how the battery went dead this winter and left him sit somewhere!!! LOL!!!
ekaxel
Why replace with an overpriced, underpowered Nissan battery when much better batteries are available for less money?
krush40
Im sure glad out here in a sunny southern california a cold day consists of about oh, I'd say 55-60.

I couldnt imagine trying to replace a battery in -30 degree weather. How do you use a wrench with gloves on?

My MO is only a year old but I will probably replace battey with a yellow top in January. My battery seems to be doing fine, but with all the electronics Ive added, I would rather not put much strain on the rest of the car.

You people don't even know what weather is! The ground shakes out there and you think you are going to slide into the ocean! I heard they are puting giant inner tubes that will inflate in case the ocean swallows your cars!!! Bahhh Humbug!!! 60-65 degrees ain't crap, my testies wouldn't even come in from those temps!!! Hnnnn.... California!!!! Uhhhh!!! LOL!!!

Ill be the first to admit it. But, I have been to the east coast in March a couple times. Thats not even the brunt of it and it was friggin cold.

You gotta admit its kinda funny that we get a little bit of rain and the only thing on the news is STORM WATCH 2007!!!! Its like the world is ending from a little bit of rain.

People need to realize that a little rain only harms witches and snowmen.
Nuf.Evah
Pure rain will make a witches tit curl up!!! LLLOOOLLL!!!

I'm not worried... my last Nissan had the original battery for 7 or 8 years. I only replaced because I was getting a little nervous.

My battery test has always been to listen to how it is starting. When it starts slower its time for a new battery. This has never failed me. I don't care about a high more powerful battery. If the one that is in the car always starts the car when its called upon then I'm a satisfied customer. Heck I just replaced my wife's original 1999 battery in her RX300...

I'll take you up on the bet that the battery will make it through this winter... no problems. A Penny was it gentlemen? Count me in, who else? :4:

Gonzo,

sorry but if comes to batteries your opinion does not count.....;)

For the past couple of months I had noticed the engine had sort of slowed down while cranking, and lights would dim a bit during start. I had my eye on an Optima Redtop ($147 at Costco) but was waiting for the battery to die first. This weekend when I was doing my regular shopping at Costco I decided that I was going to forget about Optima and just buy a group 35 Costco battery instead. It cost $56 and change, had 640 Cold Cranck Amps, it was maintenance free and had over 8.3 years of warranty with free replacement for the first three years. I thought it was a great deal so even though my OEM battery was still good (4.5 years and 78K miles) I bought one.

I was worried about the MO forgetting its idle settings while the battery was disconnected so I charged my 12 volt gel filled battery I used to use as a tank battery for my carputer....then I forgot to connect it to the MO before replacing the battery! Well, I am happy to report the MO still rememberd everything after I connected the new battery, except the radio and clock settings. I also think it zeroed the trip meter.

The most difficult part of the whole thing was removing the old battery from its well. I dropped it twice before finally getting it completely out of the hole. I used to have a tool that would grab on to the battery but could not find it.

One more thing, maybe it is just my perception but I can almost swear the MO drives better with the new battery in there! It is time to fill the tank up so I will check the MPG......:)

If your Murano is around 4 years old, just replace your OEM battery. My 04 Murano would not start after a late night snack at 3am in the morning, and it was the dead battery. 3am in the cold dark parking lot! I could not believe the Nassan OEM battery is that bad. My last Honda battery lasted 7 years before I need to change it. Anyway, got a MAXX battery from Walmart and it has no problem ever since.
Gonzo
Your (my) millage will vary. 2003, 50,000 miles original battery.
