In the mid 80's I had a 68 Shelby GT350 rag top and this SWEEEET '68 mustang f/b. Same color as Bullet. I put in a
Boss 302 with a Predator carb and it was automatic.
At the autocross (Shelby meet in Shreveport) was a guy from New Orleans, or BAton ROuge with a 69 Boss 302, inline 4 carb, and 4 speed. The night before, at the show and shine, he saw my car with a bunch of his groupies. You know, they follow him around and "He" is the expert on everything.
He sees the Boss in my car and looks inside and says "It's an automatic. It won't run. You need a 4 speed to make a Boss run." All agreed. I just said "It does alright."
The next day at the A/C I run before him and just make my "BE sure not to make a mistake" pass. He, of course, goes balls-to-the-wall, but has a decent time beating me. Makes sure I see him and his followers.
Second pass I hang it out. The track is on a 1/2 mile asphalt track with cones making the gates. Out of turn 4 there is a shot down the straight away past the stands where you can open it up. I don't remember the time, but I crushed his time.
I am in third overall behind a replica 427 side oiler Cobra and a new 5.0 liter Mustang. I remember it was the first year for the 5.0. Again he hung it out and did not come close to my time.
On the third pass I went all out, but did not better my time. I went to the finish line to watch his final pass so he could see me when he came out of turn four. Sure enough here he came out of the last corner and I stepped forward to be sure he could see me smiling.
I SWEAR he came across that finish line at 10,000 RPM's and with fury in his eyes. As in Casey at the bat, "Alas, in Mudville, the mighty Casey struck out." Did not see or hear from him the rest of the day, and he was absent when the trophys were passed out.
He did have a very nice car. Wish there had been "Pinks" back then. That little green f/b went on to scare every Chevy in the area. |
