Which Tires? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello -

I am a new owner of a Murano. Just bought an 04 SL and love it so far! At 39k miles, the Goodyear OEMs are at about 4/32" and I want to replace them before winter.

So... I know very little about cars. I want to stay with the OEM size of 235/65-18.

I have been reading reviews on tirerack.com and it seems the Goodyears arent thought highly of.

The reviews of the "Kumho Solus KR21 (Standard Touring All-Season)" and the "Michelin Cross Terrain SUV
(Highway All-Season)" are very good. The Michelins are about twice as expensive as the Kumhos, and I'm willing to pay for them if theyre worth it.

For all you car literate people out there, which do you recommend and why? Why does tirerack recommend at least a T (118mph) speed rating for non winter tires (the michelins are S-112mph rated). And also, what does "standard touring" mean?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the forum.

First of all, where you live and how you drive have a lot to do with what kind of tires you need.

Secondly, the OEM Goodyears are not a bad choice for replacement skins. They are a good all-around tire. They are relatively quiet and offer decent handling and wear. Are there better tires out there? Sure, it all depends on what you are looking for.

"Standard Touring" is the term tire-makers give to their middle-of-the road tires. Usually that means they are biased towards a smooth, comfortable ride.

Take a look in this section and you can find a ton of information regarding all of the tire options available to you.

Thanks njjoe.

I drive both in the city and on the road. I live in Minnesota, so I need something that works well in wet weather in the summer and snowy/icy weather in the winter.

I dont need anything super high performance... Im just looking for a comfortable/quiet ride and good handling.

Thanks for your help!

I don't know how anybody can directly help, other than what joe did. Look at what we say about the CTs and the Kumhos.

But nobody is going to know about both.

The reason 118mph tires are recommended is because that is the Murano's top speed. I used to drive very fast, and had to be careful when I had my winter tires on (on dry pavement) because they were only rated to 100 mph.

The stock Goodyears are decent for an all season tire, but if you get a fair bit of snow or temperatures below freezing, winter tires are a good investment. They stay soft at much lower temperatures, which makes a big difference in traction. When I had Toyo Proxes S/Ts on (all season rated), they started to get quite slippery even in rain at a few degrees above freezing.

My climate is similar to yours.

Although the Goodyears performed just fine in the crap weather, my Michelin CT's blow them away.

I have about 12,000 miles on the tires and they still look new.

If I have this car long enough to need another set of tires, I would get the cross terrains again without a second thought.

YMMV

I stayed with the OEM Goodyears.

I wanted a little bit wider tire with the same height and also wanted to stay with a Touring/All Season. The only 18" alternative was Avon which is only sold by TireRack. The ratings are pretty good. I almost did this. Only reason I stayed with Goodyear was because I know a very reputable Goodyear dealer locally.

I have always had good luck with Goodyear Touring tires. Putting 50,000 - 75,000 miles on them with tread left.

Thanks for all the info so far.. It helps a lot. Does anyone have any experience with the Kumhos specifically? I'm leaning toward them because of the price ($80 each vs. $135 for the goodyears and $170 for the Michelins).

So if I never drive over 100 it doesnt matter if theyre rated to 112 or 118?

Thanks!
