Cold Weather Steam - Click HERE for Original Thread

Now that we've had several weeks of consistently chilly weather, I've noticed that the Murano produces quite a bit of steam from the exhaust compared to just about every other car on the road around me. Is this a peculiarity of the [higher compression?] engine?

It's not a problem from what I can tell, just curious if other people have noticed it.

Its pretty normal on cold mornings, especially if you make a lot short trips where previously accumulated condensation in the exhaust system (which is essentially exposed to the outside almost the entire way up) did not burn off. I've had white steam exhaust on extremely cold mornings even after 15 minutes on the highway (but thats when it is REALLY cold, like 0F).

Assuming the radiator coolant is at the normal level, the steam is probably just condensation in the exhaust system.

A normal by-product of the combustion process is water. Water vapor is produced by all internal combustion engines. When the water vapor travels in the exhaust stream it remains invisible to the naked eye. However, when it exits the tailpipe and comes in contact with the colder air it condenses into the "steam" (as you call it) that you see.

This phenomenon is normal. It may be more noticeable in your MO because it has two exhaust tips so the air velocity exiting the the tips is half that of a single pipe system. The slower the velocity the less likely the exhaust gasses will mix with the surrounding air.

Hm. I hadn't thought of the velocity aspect of it.

As I said, it's nothing concerning me. I'm just curious if others had noticed the higher level of steam from the MO as compared to other vehicles around them.

I used to own a MAzada and for what ever reason that car never had any condensation come out of the tail pipe... never. I thought perhaps the CAT Converter died but it hadn't.... odd.
