My wife just traded her 06 Trailblazer in on a brand new 07 Murano S 2wd. The MO is like a luxury CUV compared to the Trail"crapper". We got rid of it because it was on it's second tranny and still wasn't right. Steering wheel felt like it had sand in it too. Anyways, the MO is great. The only extras we got is in the S Convience Package. It looks GREAT. It has everything that we could want. I'm a cartographer so don't really need nav. We (me and my wife) carpool to work which is only a 16 mile trip (32 roundtrip) so we're not in it long enough during the week that we could enjoy a Bose system (I'm sure it's nice though). So power seat, LCD infotainment center, dual zone temp, CD, power everything, remote keyless entry, and of course the CVT. It's time to get our first tank of gas (averaged 23.5 mpg in mixed city/hwy) since the dealer fill-up. Anyone use only 87 in their MO? Results?
Thanks for your help in advance! 87=$2.75 91=$3.05
PS
My 07 4.0L V6 Frontier uses 87 fine and it's compression ratio is (I think) 9.7:1. Our company's 2004 3.5L Pathfinders that use 87 flawlessly. Clubfrontier.com had someone do a dyno test using 87 and 91 and there was virtually no different in peak power. Also, MPG, only changed by less than 0.5 mpg (well within the margin of error). |

This topic has been discussed to death in other threads (use the search). Bottom line: for maximum performance and mileage use 91+, but 87 is also fine to use and will not damage the engine. You will lose a little power and fuel economy though. Whether it offsets the 10% price difference depends on how you drive.
I use super unleaded in my MO as it doesn't add up to that much over the entire year (essentially $4 per fillup). |

I've said it several times before, but I'll say it again:
Around here, it's basically a 10 cent difference between grades, so to go from "Regular" to "Premium" it's usually 20 or maybe 25 cents per gallon.
With gas being around $3.50/gallon in my area, that's about a 6% increase in cost.
As gas prices continue to rise (you don't expect them to go DOWN, do you) this percentage should get smaller and smaller as the differential between grades usually remains constant.
So if premium fuel is what is recommended for the vehicle, why not? I mean, you managed to afford a new vehicle, you bought an SUV rather than a car (granted a decent mileage suv) so I assume you can afford to put gas in it as needed, go ahead and spend the extra pocket change to get the fuel that it was designed for.
My last fill-up was 18.135 gallons, a total cost of $61.28 (premium). If I would have saved the 22 cents per gallon and gone with regular, I would have an extra $4 in my pocket. That's not very much, especially considering what the market has been doing to my investment portfolio lately (holy cow).
All that said, many people on this forum have been using regular without a problem. Some people have gotten some engine knocking, but it seems rare (MO has an anti-knock sensor, so if you DO get knocking you should have it checked out because something is wrong). A FEW have noticed a very small change in mpg between the grades, but then others have disputed that by saying standard variance between tanks can offset mpg more than what is reported. |
