Just got back from the dealer... - Click HERE for Original Thread

(Ok, don't get excited by the subject line... I am not a 2009 Mo owner yet!)

I just went to the dealer here in Richmond, VA to test drive a Rogue because I got something from Nissan that said if I test drove one by the end of the month, they would give me a $50 AmEx card. I figured it was worth it since I am still considering a Rogue purchase, but little did I know I would have to suffer through not only the salesman's push, but also the Finance Manager's spiel! I swear I told them a hundred times I was just researching and nothing short of a free car was going to get me to buy today!!

Anyway, I was surprised to discover while there that they had gotten in a couple 2009 Muranos, so I got to sit in an SL a bit after driving the Rogue. Oh my... it is nice! The seats are very plush... I think plusher than the 07 Muranos (not that I own one). I really wish I could have turned one on and played with everything, but I had my chance to get away from the sales guy, so I didn't want to push my luck. I think it looks better in person than it does in pictures... I know some really are put off by the new grill, but I think the pictures actually over exaggerate it. In person, I think it is more upscale looking now than the old cheshire cat grin grill.

As for the Rogue... it drove nice and I like it well enough, but it doesn't necessarily excite me. I drive a 2000 Sentra now and the Rogue really reminds of the Sentra -- just in SUV form. It would be nice to have something, well, nicer... but just how much debt do I need to go into? Yet, while the Rogue is more within my reach financially, is it the car I want to drive for the next 8 years? I know I could get a Rogue now and move up to a Murano in a couple years if I felt more financially able to do so, but then I might as well just keep driving my Sentra! Sigh... maybe I just need to get a better paying job!

I suppose what it really comes down to is that I am just too darn practical and tight-fisted to buy a new car!! So if I am going to buy one, I don't want to compromise!

I know I read about it in the literature, but can someone explain to me the point of the yellow-red-white audio/video input jacks? They are located at the back of the center console for use by people in the back, but for what? What do you plug into them? Where does it output? I just don't get it...
Gonzo
I believe it is for video and audio input.
BugAHoo
Yeah, I know they are input jacks, but what would someone use them for? Input to where?

Maybe they are for the people who get the optional DVD player so you can hook up a video game to it.

I will look in my owners manual and see.

Thanks... yeah, I guess that would make sense... I just wouldn't have guessed that it would be there WITHOUT having the DVD player.

In fact, now that I think about it... the Mo I looked at had the dual-panel moonroof, so it couldn't have been equipped with DVD anyway, yet it still had the A/V inputs. Weird...

I will keep searching through my manual. Mine has the dual roof and the jacks in the rear too. I will find is in a few minutes. The football game has be sidetracked.

I read something else interesting. It says you can view a video on the front screen but your car must be in park (for vehicles with Nav and DVD). That is something difference from the previous model too.

Here is the answer to the mysterious jacks in the rear.

The manual reads:

WARNING
Park the vehicle in a safe location and apply the parking brake to view the images on the front center display screen using the DVD drive or other devices connected to the auxillary input jacks (if so equipped).

I interpret that to mean you can view images (video) through your NAV screen if you connect a DVD player to the rear jacks but you must have the car in park.

Thanks... I should have figured you were watching the game... I am! (Is it NEVER too cold to play football? Isn't there a point at which playing in weather this cold is dangerous? Geez!)

Well that is really interesting about the jacks... seems to me a really strange feature to have. I mean, I know people have modded their cars in the past to take advantage of the built-in screen, but it is most unusual for Nissan to enable such use on their own. I mean, this is kind of above and beyond for them, isn't it?

So now that we know what they are for and how to use them, who actually thinks they will get much use out of them? I understand why it is usable only in Park (I work in traffic safety), but I can't think of many scenarios when I would sit in my Murano to watch DVDs and what not on the little 7" screen.

(Sigh... Ahmad Bradshaw... we really could have used your speed in Cville! Why couldn't you have kept your nose clean?!?)

I'm wondering if the Navigation system is required to use the built-in screen to display something from the a/v inputs?

If I could use the screen to display a video from my iPod (or even pictures from a digital camera), that could be pretty useful.

I think that is the case. The last words in the paragraph are from the manual on page 4-64 "If So Equipped". With that statement, I would guess only the vehicles with Nav are equipped with those jacks. If it were to work with all they would have put "If So Equipped". This is just a guess on my part and not the gospel. :)

If what 3.5 Lover said in another thread is true, then it would seem Nav is required for video display... but I am kind of surprised by that.

I have been pouring over the brochure, trying to make sense out of the A/V hokey-pokey that seems to be going on in this car, and here is how I understand it:

Every Murano comes standard with Aux audio in on the head unit. BUT, that port goes away when the car is equipped with the optional 6-disk Bose unit (standard on LE), and then the A/V inputs are added on the back of the center console. However, it seems only the audio port of those A/V inputs may work if the car is not equipped with Nav (and if it does have Nav, then the video inputs can be used to output video to the screen, but only when parked). Now, on the LE, you also get the iPod connection, so I guess that would give you 2 options for connecting an MP3 player.

Beyond that, you have the option to add DVD to the car, but then you can't get the dual panel Moonroof. I don't know the impact on the A/V inputs if you add the DVD package or if they could even be used to plug in a game console that would display through the DVD monitor.

According to the brochure though, if you add DVD, you CANNOT also have the Nav package... it's apparently one or the other. And, if you DO go with Nav, you forfeit your 6-disc changer... it's still a Bose, but just with one CD slot. In exchange, you get the "music box" hard drive and the compact flash slot (and you still have the ipod connector).

"You put your left foot in, you take your left foot out..."! :crazyeye:

I guess the only way to find out is to try it on a non-Nav and non-DVD equipped Murano and see if both the video and audio inputs are live.

As BugAHoo mentioned, the brochure mentions that the standard aux-in jack is replaced with a/v inputs with the Bose system, which means that you could have the a/v inputs and neither the Navigation nor the Rear Seat DVD system.

It seems odd that Nissan would include the video jacks with the Bose system if they serve no purpose on non-Nav and non-DVD models (other than to keep us guessing as to their function :)).

Here is some more info from the owners manual page 4-48

Auxillary Input Jacks

The auxillary input jacks are located on teh rear of the center console. NTSC compatible devices such as video games, camcorders, and portable video players can ve connected to the auxillary jacks. Compatible audio devices such as some MP3 players can also be connected to the system through the auxillary jacks.

This supports the other statement "If so equipped" and leads me to believe some models don't come with the jacks.

One of two situations would make sense, non DVD equipped Muranos have this as an option so you can view video on the front screen.

Situation 2. Only Vehicles with Nav can take advantage of this option due to the screen configuration of vehicles with Nav.

To find out for sure, if someone will go to a Dealer and try out the different models and see if there are jacks in the rear on of the various models.
