hi everybody
i have a 2003 murano SL AWD. a few months after we bought it used, we heard this weird knocking noise when we turn the wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right. usually this happens when we park. of course, this is right when the warranty was expiring.
we finally got to the mechanic today, and he said he read the service bulletin about it. the bulletin states that usually when you torque the bolts on the steering rack (? i know nothing about this stuff) and he said that it didn't work. he said that the bushings in the rack were worn down, and that the whole rack had to be replaced. $1000 part, plus labor.
this sucks. can anyone confirm a similar problem? should i try taking it to the dealer even though my warranty is expired? should i purchase an independent extended warranty?
thanks for your help! |

Welcome to the forum.
A service bulletin (NTB 03-065a) was issued on 01/09/2004 to address your particular problem.
There are two bolts and one nut that secure the steering rack to the frame. Apparently the factory did not sufficiently tighten these fasteners when the car was assembled.
I think your MO is too far out of the warranty period to have the rack repaired for free. However, the dealer may be able to simply replace the worn bushing and save you $900. I suggest giving them a call.

I had the bushings go bad on a Jaguar. No dice. Not a orderable part. I went for the whole steering rack. Ouch.
Hope you can get the bushings........but a lot of times i would imagine, with the bushings gone, the rack or the pinion wear unevenly and have to be replaced anyway.

| I would go to the dealer and have the bolts tightened first to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, then I would consider replacing the rack. |
