CVT Seal Leak - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello all -

I took MO in for a routine oil change this morning and found out that she has transmission seal leak. She's only 7 months old with 11K miles. Anyone else experience the dreaded CVT seal leak so early on?

WOW:eek:

That really sucks..

Think there have been one or two but I don't remember how low the mileage was off hand, check the stickied CVT failure thread. Should have all the problems noted in there, including mileage.

Actually, believe it or not, you can consider that to be good news. A few years ago the first you heard of a problem was when the CVT or x-fer case failed. Now, both the dealers and owners know what to look for. A leaky seal will most certainly lead to catastrophic CVT and/or x-fer case failure if left unchecked. Be happy that it happened now and not outside of the warranty period.

Hopefully Nissan and/or Jatco is aware of this long-standing problem and are working to correct it.

Good and bad news. Took MO in prepared to have the seal replaced. The Dealer even set me up with a rental car for 2 days (covered under the Security Plus Extended Warranty). When the service technician went to work on the tranny, they found that several of the bolts were loose around the leak area. They torqued them down, conducted a die test and no more leaks. I had the dealer note exactly where the leak was located for furture reference. I'm going to have them inspect it again during my next scheduled maintenance.

Bad news - hmmm, you start wondering how many other bolts they forgot to tighten properly that day when the car was manufactured...

Now you know how I felt back in 03 when I found out they had neglected to tighten the steering rack on my, and others, car.

Superior workmanship.

Yeah, right.

It's the design that makes the MO superior, not the workmanship.

The good news is once we finish doing their quality control, these are very good cars.

Agreed. The sad part is 2 other Nissan dealers had done prior oil changes and maintenance and neither mentioned the leak. Both signed off on their "27 point inspection" or whatever they call it during the service visits.

Ironically, the leak was discovered at a third Nissan dealer but in their "Quick Lube" facility and not in their main service department. I had recently learned that the Elk Grove Nissan and Infinity Dealership had the special express Quick Lube for oil changes and other simple maintence 7 days a week. I tried out this service since an appointment wasn't necessary and the oil change and car wash could be done in around 30 minutes while you wait. They noticed it during the oil change and immediately instructed me to go over to the main service department and set up an appt. for the repair.

Go figure...

Definitely consider it a good news, i had no leak warnings at all during the ownership of the MO and just this week my Mo sustained x-fer case and transmission replacement ( discovered by simple knock at the front wheels), so i would say you're lucky.

My leak was found at 2,500 miles!!! I have been back to the dealer four times. I am now beginning to process a Florida Lemon Law claim.

Good luck, do what you have to do. I think I would have taken the same path at this point. Four times...

JUST FYI:

UPDATE:

After having the seals replaced, I thought everything was OK, NOT!!!

After one week of driving, I kept smelling a burning oil smell. A check of the CVT revealed a WORSE LEAK. Prior to the repair, there was only seepage, now there is DRIPPING!!!

I inspected the seal on the passenger's side and it looks like its leaking from the seal and drain plug area. I cleaned the area twice only to find it wet and dripping of NS2 the next day. I'll let you know how it goes at the dealership...I am not happy. So, for anyone else who has had the work done, check it again. Just in case.

Results: 2 days later I get a call sayin that the seal was defective??? So again, re-check them just in case!!!

Well at least they could reproduce it. :2:
